blown shock

I blew the rear shock on my 01 xplorer400, oil leaking everywhere. After I replace it, should I stiffen the rear spring so I'm using more spring than shock? it is currently in the softest setting. My wt. is 250 and I haven't noticed any bottoming set where it is. Could it even be bottomed out? thanks in advance....mike

The problem isn't so much using the rear shock instead of the springs, it is because the stock shock has little or no compression dampening to begin with. It must therefore rely on the springs to control compression dampening. A good aftermarket shock will cure this. You don't have to go "whole hog" and get the $600+ Works Ultra-Cross shock for you machine either. Check outProgressive Suspension. I think they'll be able to fix you up.
The reason the shock wore out, was more than likely because of dirt wearing out the seals, than from it bottoming. Get yourself a set of Shockwears.
