Broken CV !!!!! RRRRRRRRRR
#1
Well, I finally did it today while trying to go over a big log. Got hung up, put her in Reverse and 4x4, the wheel kinked to one side and SNAPP!!
Anyhow, how much do they cost to replace? Is it a tough job? I noticed the metal clamps on the boot, how hard are they to get off and replace? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

Roofer, i have broken 9 cv joints in the last year on my 2000 xplorer. They are about 230 bucks a piece. The first two were covered under warranty. I broke them as soon as i put on my outlaws, lift kit, and spacers. I took everything off before i took it in to have fixed so the dealership wouldn't know. The next time i broke one i took it in and they saw the tires, lift, spacers, etc.,etc. No more warranty. So the last 7 have been on me. So take everything off before you take it in there. Make it look stock. If they don't warranty it then you can do it yourself. They are very easy to install but take time and patience. You will need a book if you don't already have one. It took me about 2 hours to do the first one now it takes me about 30 minutes. Just follow the book step by step and it's simple. While your in there you might want to replace all your seals and check the bearings. If you need any more help just let me know. I have lots of experience in putting one in.

MEANGREENMACHINE,
Seeing how many joints you break, I wonder if you have chain problems as well. What about chaincase problems? I've considered putting more aggressive tires on my Xplorer, but haven't yet. How hard is it to change the seals in the hub? Do they simply pry out and tap back in? Thanks.

I used to have chain problems. When i bought my bike, the day i put my tires on i broke the chain. I then bought a sidewinder chain. That lasted about 7 months and finally wore out. I am now running an x ring chain and it shows no signs of wear. I am also running an 11 tooth countershaft sprocket and a 42 tooth rear sprocket for extra low end power. The seals just pop right out and back in. They are very easy to replace. There is one on the inside of the strut and one on the inside of the hub housing. I pop mine out with a screwdriver and a hammer. You have to take off the disc to do the one on the hub housing. Just make sure that when you put the new cv joint in you don't let it pop out of the joint. It can be a pain to get back in.

just an f.y.i. theres a company called gorilla something or other, they have aftermarket c/v`s that are gauranteed for life, price quoted for my expedition 425 was 250 a side.if you take your axle out and send it to them they replace the entire c/v on your axle with heavy duty parts, also a heavy duty boot is installed..i just had one done under warranty by the dealer but if they wont keep fixing them ill be buying some gorillas..i had to take off the lift and tires before it goes back..i made my spacers easy to take out so it only takes like 30 min`s to remove it and the tires,i dont have to remove the spring just loosen the strut cartridge(thanks gregsims)..good luck with it.. the number for gorilla is 800-283-6468,i beleive their in louisiana,i havent tried them yet but the price is around the same as o.e.m. and their gauranteed for life,no reasons they wont keep fixing them is what they told me,no if`s and or butt`s
next time you get in that position, do yourself a favor dont try backing up when the wheel is a full turn like that..its basically the same thing i did,got stuck going forward with wheel hard to the right, backed up about 10 ft.wheel wouldnt straighten because of the thick mud, then i went forward and snap..funny thing was the rubber boot kept everything together,it never tore..i think it broke when i backed up and i finished it off when i went forward..maybe ill come up with some kind of steering limiter???

They sell all kinds of cv joint parts and tools for cars and atv's. I haven't personally used them, but I have a complete (blown apart) axle in my garage that I plan on rebuilding with their parts. It sure beats $200+ for a complete axle!!!

Jerry, my ICQ # is in my post, just click on the flower thingy.
Tanks for all the help guys! I am in the process of moving into my house this weekend. I will probably tear it apart next week if my dealer won't fix it. I will probably have questions about the install then. BTW, anyone want to buy some 26" Titan 589 MT's??? Had them on 2 rides since I bought them.
Thanks again
