depends on the surface. If it's real grippy, go for 1st. Most of the time, though, 2nd is perfect. As far as bogging down, I like to let off the clutch fast (so the wheels spin) and sit back (like a shy wheelie move). It makes fast take offs and doesn't risk to burn your clutch...and depending how hard you go back, you can keep a reasonable amount of wheelspin with no bogging down.

By dumping the clutch you are only causing the wheels to spin which is exactly what you don't want for maximum traction.

I guess it just depends on what kind of surface you start on. My local track is real loamy at the starting gate, and when you dump the clutch, the wheels spin for a VERY short time before hooking up and shooting you off like a rocket. If you are starting on a harder surface however, then dumping the clutch will like was said make your wheels spin more than you want. It's hard to think that having no wheel spin on a 2-stroke is possible though.
Does anyone know why a 2-stroke spins and a 4-stroke just hooks up? I am just curious. When I first started racing on a 300ex, when I would start in 2nd and dump the clutch, I would ride a big *** wheelie, and that sucked, so I had to really learn to feather it to not pop the front end up, the wheels sure didnt spin. On my R however, I never pop wheelies on the start, just dig in and go. Just kinda wondered if there was a reason or not.

The only way you are going to figure out the problem is to get to the track and take advantage of the practice time.... Do some hole shots....Shifting from first to second is not hard...But starting out in second should work fine.
