New Service Assistant !!!!!
#1
I was just hired tonight. As of 6:55 P.M. tonight, I became the new Assistant Service Manager at my local Polaris / Yamaha Dealer. I realize that this is no big deal to anyone here at this forum other than my dad but, I am really PUMPED. I've been wanting to get a job that dealt with ATV's. Now I've finially got it.
I've worked as an Autoparts Salesman for a few years. Before that I ran a tool truck for the same company. In June, one of the stores I sold for was transfered to another company and I was laid off. I took some time off and basically did some things around the house. Not to mention alot of work on my wheeler. I was trying to hold off on just getting a job because I wanted to get a job doing something I enjoy. What can I say, I love playing with big boy toys and now my job is helping people get their toy fixed so they can enjoy playing with toys too.
This has nothing really to do with Polaris but, I just had to vent a little enthusiasm to some people how could understand why I might be so PUMPED!

Congrats Elroy, I would love to do the same but not enough money for me. You know, the wife and kid thing, they insist on eating ! I envy your job and good luck with it!

Congratulations, Judgeing by your excitement and enthusiasm you will be good at your new job. As a business owner, I have noticed that my best employees enjoyed their job and the slackers are always looking for Friday.............. If you happen to feel guilty about getting paid for the fun you will be having, I can give you an account number that you can forward those checks to!

As far as the money thing, you do good enough and you will make the $$$. Alot of these guys don't realize exactly how much you can make at ATV shops.
Anyway, speaking from experience, I have loved every minute of it. So I am sure you will. One other thing, you will learn A LOT of very useful tech tips and tricks. Hint: Keep some tricks to yourself and you will go a long way.

elroy,
Congratulations! Remember if you do something for free, it's considered fun. If you do something for money, it's considered work. Just imagine that you're not getting paid and everything will be O.K. Just don't forget to pick up the paycheck on Friday, though!

Elroy ,
Congratulations , I recall when I opened the doors here 18 years ago , it was very exciting .
I wish you the best of luck . Being the go between from customer to mechanic is a tough role . You have customers who want problems resolved for the amount of money they expected , and you have mechanics who are going to be expected to fulfill your promises . Sending junk to your mechanics will have them ready to string you up in a week . A big part of being a service manger is knowing what NOT is going to go through your shop . On questionable machines , take the time to find everything wrong with the machine before begining work on it . This is for your protection as well as the customer . There is little use in having a customer drop $900 in a $1000 machine . Most customers will see the folly of it and call it off , others will have you do it , but they go in with eyes wide open , which is the way it should be in situations like this .
I could go on and on about situations to be avoided and other matteres of service , but I need to get to work myself .
You have figured out the first thing in working in a shop.--How to get hired on--
Myself , after 18 years , I have another challenge . --How to get out--
Anybody want to run their own up and running turn key shop ????

Congrats, Elroy. As a wise man once said, "If you can find someone to pay you for doing what you want to be doing anyway, you will never have to 'work' a day in your life."
PS don't keep ALL the tips to yourself!
