Two hours away from my vehicle I melted my radiator overflow tube.
I lost alot of fluid but it did not feel it was a major problem. Minutes later I bash a rear tire.Well, another bad day for my scambler 500.I put her in 4x4 and off I limped.An hour later I arrive at my vehicle and she just dies.Turns over,but will not start.She also began to smell like burned oil.She did feel warm,but the fan never turned on.I'll check the oil I figure.I found my oil was so hot it melted my dipstick completely off.I cant imagine what the rest of my engine looks like.Looks like an engine rebuild for my 2000 scrambler 500....? anyone know if the plastic could have reached into engine?

 

the heat wouldnt have nescisarily killed your engine
but the melted part of the dipstick, once the oil cools, is going to be all over the place in your engine, before you even try to turn it on again, bring it to a dealer, spend alot of money, and have the block cleaned

 

Sorry about the bad day dude. The engine may have some cooked seals, orings, gaskets among other things. If the seals are okay and you're able to get all of the dipstick out. there is no paticular reason to not just change the oil and go on, if not a little more warily.

The worst overheated engine I ever had had seized a valve wide open and then when the piston stopped it cooked in place too. Call me a cheap skate but I got the head off(and discovered that cooling was blocked) I got the valve moving with WD40, a hammer, and visegrips for twisting. WD40 in the bore along with hammering got the piston moving. Pieced it together and away life went, that engine ran for the rest of the time I had it ( maybe 80 more hours ) before it was stolen. It did burn marginally more oil after it was siezed, but not evough to cause immediate plug problems.

 

Well, I opened my my oil cooler to find missing part of dipstick was not there.Im assuming now that my engine needs to be taken apart and cleaned.While it is apart should I consider replacing piston and cam.Labor would be reasonable(No idea what parts cost).Has anyone modded a 500? What would you recommend?

 

no base gasket , use yamabond, wisco piston, aaen camshaft, POlaris cams suck are a rulet wheel many soft cams. port the head while it is off, aaen can do this if you dont have the means. hpd or hotseat for a clutch kit, tell them what you have done to the bike first and they will give you soomething close, you will need to put a tach on it to finish clutching it they will help you.
