What's better in the mud, Rubicon or 450?

Hey all,
I was just wondering which of these two machines performs better in the muck? Also, how do they compare to the new Grizzly 660 in mud? One of the guys at Highlifter told me that he thinks the Ruby does better in mud than the Griz. Seems strange seeing how the new Griz has more power, much more ground clearance plus a locking front differential. His explanation was that the "Rubicon puts it's power to the ground better." What do you guy's think about any of the above?

Well, I haven't seen a 660 in the mud yet, but I definatly don't believe what that guy said. As you pointed out, more power, more ground clearance, a front locker...you'd have to be foolish to think that that won't mean something.
As for the question about the 450 vs the Rubicon; there is nothing that the 450 can do which the Rubicon won't do better. Plain and simple, no arguments about it.

Was this a person in the HL forums? I have both the 660 and the Rubicon. For mudding I can say that I prefer the Rubicon. Granted it doesnt have the ground clearance or the 4wd I like the lack of belt and ease of snorkel. The Rubicon is the easiet quad I have ever seen to snorkel. I just got a 2 inch flex tube and put it in the stock hole in the airbox and tightened up the clamp.....done. The Rubicon has a ton of power that Honda is hiding.

I believe from what i have heard that the Rubi will out do the 660 in the mud only because the yamaha has a 20mph. limit while in locking diff. mode. You dont get as much wheel spin. That is why the 650 Priarie is said to do better in deep mud than the 660 eventhough it does not have the ground clearence . It has no rev limit.

Cant you override the rev limit
one one of these guys is probably working on it right now
TEX,you prefer the ruby, but is it better??
I mean if you put the same rider on each bike witch one will outperform the other(Snorkle aside)??
Wheres this ton of power RUBY is hideing, besides the 550 big bore kit.My buddy Loves his Ruby but is always complaining of the lack of power. And he says he cant find any.
Back to the snorkle...thats it for snorklling it??You dont have to do the exhaust?what about vents?

Hey TexMud,
Thanks for your, and everyone else's replies. I'm like you, I too have a Ruby, and a 660. I just got both of them. I traded my 2000 Kodiak 4x4 for the 660, and my 2000 Rancher 4x4 ES for a new Ruby. I've had a chance to take the Griz. out a few times, and it seemed to like it performed excellent. I got the Griz. on the 9-11. I just brought the new yellow Ruby home on Thurs. of this week, so I haven't had time to test it out. The guy I talked to at HighLifter is named Mark Sepulvado. He works there and has a Ruby himself. I took mine straight over there from the Honda dealership to get tires put on because they were cheaper. I put a set of 27" Titan 589's on her. One things for sure, the Ruby just feels like it's built with more quality than the 660. The tranny is much smoother and the motor is much quieter. However, the Griz. has easier steering and the ride is MUCH more plush. It's definitely the best riding ATV I've ever been on. Anyway, I can't wait to get the RUBY out and see what she'll do!!

500Duse, as far as which one is better thats preference and nothing else. A good rider on a Honda 300 could out mud a Rubicon and a 660 with a bad rider. If the snorkel is not an issue (first off you need to go deeper) they will still be pretty equal. If you get off camber situation the 660 will shine due to true 4wd. The power your buddy is looking for can be unleashed with just the HL Performance Kit. He does NOT have to bore it to have tons of power. Honda de-tunes their engines and the kit lets some of the hidden power out. You do have to extend the vent lines that goes without saying. You dont need an exhaust snorkel.
650mudrider, I dont think wheel speed is the issue. Tires are designed to do a job. Mud tires are designed to pull you through mud. I never get about maybe 10 mph while in the mud. Spin the tires nice and slow and let the tires do the work they were designed to do. This has never failed me. Truck mud tires are designed for high wheel spin to clear, ATV tires are totally different. The 22MPH will never hurt the 660 in mud.
