250R clutch problem?
#1
Ok guys need some help if possible. I just updated my 86 trx to the 89 clutch style and also put in a Hinson basket while I was at it. After putting it all back together it seemed great. The clutch seems a lot easier and you have a lot more feel. But after riding it for about 30 mins. It really started to smoke? White smoke? Almost smells like antifreeze? Could the water pump be bad? Reassembled wrong? Can transmission oil or antifreeze be leaking into on another? Any help would be great. Would be nice to know what I could possible be getting involved with before I open her up again.
thanks in advance.

As long as U got the shaft back inside the counterbalancer from the water pump it should be fine.
I don't think it has to do with reassemably. But rather a blown head or base gasket.
My 250r has a strange noise coming from the clutch and I can't figure it out.IT souns like metal to metal contact like grinding right as U let the clutch out.I put a new inner basket in it.I guess I am going to do like U did and get the hinson basket, pressure plate and a 89 update kit.

when ever you guys put a clutch back together you should always
soak all you clutch parts in new oil,and replace the gear oil 2.

Does the smoke smell kinda sweet but yet kinda bitter??? Yessir that'd be anti-freeze... Sounds to be a classic head gasket leak. Pull the front fenders, pull the gas tank. Drain the coolant via the drain hole in the water pump cover. Pull the head stay and pull the head...If there is any kind of greyish build up/deposits that's anti-freeze burning. Look around the edge of the gasket to look for any signs of leaking. If when you remove the rad cap it seems to be under alot of pressure that is another sign of head gasket leak. The combustion gasses are pressurizing the cooling system. New gasket is about $20...
If you have a base gasket leaking it would be drooling oil/fuel mix and would have an air leak which is most noticable as a high hanging idle...or a melted piston...
If the water pump seal goes, this would get water in your oil. It'd look like a milk shake if you drained the tranny oil. I'd recc doing that just to check. But the tranny oil and the coolant are sealed seperate systems. If the WP seal goes it leaks into the oil. If the crank main seal goes it will suck tranny oil into the crankcases and make it run SUPER rich and blow blueish smoke. The only way for antifreeze to get in the combustion chamber is via the head gasket or cracked head or cylinder, with most common the head gasket being the culprit, it's VERY rare that a head or cylinder will leak unless fiddled with...

Ok pulled off the head. Seemed to be alrught. But still replaced the head gasket with new. Also looked over the clutch side case as well. All seemed in check. Did replace the waterpump cover gasket that was shot. But no leaking from there. When I drained the tanny oil it was milky? Looked like whiteish streaks in it? But don't seem to be losing a ton of antifreeze. Barely any? SO I think it could be the water pump seal? How do you get that whole shaft out? I undid the nut on the imprellor. And removed the shaft. But I didn't have the new seal on hand so wasn't eager to try and pull it out and possibly do more damage? When i do get the seal so I just pull the bearing ans seals right out? What should I use to do this? You guys think it it the waterpump seal? thanks for the help.
