I took the 2002 500 H.O. in for service for a idle and backfiring problem also I had the dealer replace the front springs with heavy duty front springs. When I picked it up the mechanic said he adjusted the shifter for me that it was out of adjustment, and that while installing the springs on the front the CV joint slipped out but he put it back in he said he accidently let the strut housing drop down to far.Okay I think to myself he is a mechanic it will be ok! guess what I go home and try it out and it is SCREWED.I try it on a hill that requires me to use the 4 wheel drive to get up it and when I get back on level ground and dis-engage the 4 wheel drive and try to run in reverse the machine wont move unless I really push the gas so I put it in netural and try to roll backwards it still wont move unless I get off and push like HELL!.I put it in high range and took off and every thing seemed to work fine then so I tried to back up again on flat ground with the 4 wheel drive turned off and the same thing happened again it would hardly move in reverse or netural backwards I tryed this several times with the same results.I jacked it up and the wheels spin freely no problem it just feels like something is holding the machine back kinda like the brake is applied just a little bit Its not making any poping or strange sounds, but I now It never did this before takeing it in for repair.HAS ANY BODY HAD OR HEARD OF THIS KIND OF PROBLEM MY MACHINE IS A 2002 SPORTSMAN 500 h.o

Not to sound like a jackass, but I'd be back at the dealer instead of waiting for an answer online foorm sombody.

Are you still under warranty? If so get the dealer rectify the promblem, and ride it on the lot before leaving too.

That is a wierd one, I'm wondering if it has something to do with the gear selector adjustment. Keep us informed !!!!

Classic inexperienced mechanic. Been there. Not fun. It's too often when the customer knows more than the mechanic does. My local dealer mechanic doesn't know how to read a dipstick oil level.

OKAY day 2- well I called the dealer back this morning and talked to the mechanic or should I say the water boy he said he took the hubs apart and couldnt find any thing wrong, but he offered me this! he said he got a new 500 H.O. off the lot and rode it and it did the same thing as my machine, but it was ready come and get it.I drove 45 miles PISSED OFF but I decided on the way to make the service manager put it in writing when I got there.I went in and told him what I wanted him to do about writing my complaint and also his response and he agreed to do it,he wrote the following on the work order-----<Machine will not roll backwards when in reverse or netural sometimes!tested one of our machines it did the same thing checked customers machine then he signed the service manager and his name>------- and gave it to me HE COULD HAVE GAVE A RATS A$$.I told him I was going to keep this work order so when it ran out of warranty and polaris wouldnt cover my problem I would have it in writing were He couldnt fix it.I just want to say this is a dealer who fills like if you didnt buy it there he doesnt owe you anything. Now we get to the good part of this post!I knew of another dealer about 90 miles away so I thought I would call him and see if he would help me HE ASKED ME TO EXPLAIN ALL THE PROBLEMS IN DETAIL AND WHAT THE WATER BOY DID AT THE OTHER DEALERSHIP.I did so for about 15 min. when we finished talking he said bring it to me I have 2 certified master POLARIS mechanics and would be HAPPY to try and help me.I drove to his dealership and went in an asked for him but he had gone to lunch so this other guy says to me did you call this morning about the 2002 H.O. I said yes I did and then he calls the mechanic to the front to to talk to me about my problems then the parts guy gets involved in the conversation.I WANT EVERYONE WHO READS THIS TO KNOW THAT BY THE TIME I LEFT HIS DEALERSHIP THE MECHANIC AND THE PARTS MAN AND ONE OF THE OWNERS HAD RODE MY MACHINE AND DISCOVERED AT LEAST 3 DIFFERENT PROBLEMS.I left an hour after I arrived feeling very good about things finally I found a dealer WHO GAVE A RATS A$$ I think these guys care about there reputation and they surely made me a believer out of me I should get A report about my machine next week and will post there findings I must say I FEEL GOOD ABOUT THIS DEALERSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

samclow,
i really think you should foward this info to polaris. they need to know about their inconsistent dealer network so they can do something about it.
just think of how many other people are getting bad advice from that lousy, no-good dealer!?!

smart move on your part for trying someone different!
