backup light on atv

best way to wire a backup light on a 450s?

You could wire it two ways.

[1] You can wire it into your taillights so that it comes on anytime your lights are on.

[2] This is the best way, and the ones that I've seen are wired this way.
I will assume that your light only has a hot and ground. Run the possitive wire to underneath your dash and connect it to your reverse indicator light wire. Then just ground the other wire. Be sure and put an in-line fuse on the positive wire between the rev. indicator light and back up light. Also, if your backup light only has two wires and it doesn't specify as to which is positive or negative then it won't matter which one you connect to the rev. wire

but this will make your rev. light come on every time you decied to back up, is there a way to wire it so that it only comes on when you have your light on and in rev.

Something like KnALt said, except I'd add a relay [in the fuse box battery compartment area] for a larger back up light-in the thirty watt class.

Get a relay from the auto parts store. Wire one side of the relay to your head lights (+) or to the tail light (+) if it's on with your head lights. Wire the other side of the relay to a connection on the backup light. Wire the other side of the backup light to ground.

Wire the (+) side of the relay coil to the reverse indicator (+) side. Wire the other side of the relay coil to ground.

The following link is a schematic of what was described. The schematice shows one side of the relay connected to +12V but that could be substituted to the head lights (+).

It might be better to use another relay activated by the head lights to provide +12V to the backup light. This would keep the head light current through the head light switch and fuse near normal.
