I just bought a used 2001 400EX and the guy I got it from did not have the owners manual. When the engine is cool the oil level is fine but after I ride and the engine heats up the oil level is at the top of the reservoir. Is this normal? Do you check the oil when its cool or hot? Also, What is the capacity of the oil and when you change the oil do you drain both the crankcase and the reservoir. I know that is a bunch of questios but I don't want any trouble out of this thing. Thanks in advance. JP

According to the Honda Service Manual you should let the bike idle for 5 min (10 Min if it is cold outside) Then let the bike sit for a minuite or so and check the oil by inserting the dipstick into the tank but don't thread it in. Also you need to drain both the oil tank and the crankcase when changing the oil as well as change the filter on the right side of the motor. These all work best when warm. By the way when you pull the filter cover off oil will run out of there as well so make sure you have a small dish to hold under it to catch the oil. Hope this helps. I just looked this up the other day so I am certain on the details. Good luck.
