I have a 300ex that my wife and son share. My son really wants something a little faster (he also rides 2 stroke dirt bikes), but neither one of them wants to give up reverse for the tight woods we ride in (of course my won wants my Raptor, but it scares me to think of that :^) ). If I put a 330 kit with the other needed engine extras and works shocks on the 300ex will it be about comparable in handling and power to a stock 400ex? We will be riding in the Colorado woods trails, not racing or jumping. I have always loved the 300ex, but the suspension feels kind of nonexistant in the rough stuff, hence the shock replacement idea. I have already put a supertrapp head pipe/muffler, Uni filter, and air box mods on the 300ex, but I can't really feel the difference much (I haven't rejetted yet). This may just be because I test ride the 300ex when I get off of the Raptor...

You should do the jetting on the 300ex first...Maybe open up the airbox a tad... When I had my 300ex...pipe and jets alone made a noticable difference.

This will not help in the suspension area..so something may still be in order to fix that problem.

 

a 330 kit built right will outrun a 400ex , my friend has one. you would need a high comp piston and run it on race gas. it will not handle like a 400ex with shocks because the 400ex is wider and a little bit lighter than a 300ex. you would need some a arms and and axle to take care of the handling. if you got some dual rate works shocks you would prolly feel a difference in the handling with no other chassis components.
