ok, i recently had my raptor's tranny repared....while the machine was still under warrenty, and my .....dealer...... gave me the bill (1500 dollars) and the broken gears....now, he told me the reason my tranny wasen't covered under warrenty was because i must have hit a rock and bent the shift fork, causing the tranny to detonate. now, as i look at the gears , 2nd gear and 4th gear and teh shift fork, and see that all 3 dogs on my 2nd gear are broken off, then as i look at the other 2 shift forks that arn't bent, i realize it wasen't me hitting a rock that bent the shift fork near 2nd/4th gear, it was that 2nd gear came out of alignment due to the fact of that the dogs are rounded and they tend to push the 2 gears apart instead of pulling togther, when this happened it bent the shift fork. now, i ask my self, as i look at my december 2001 issue of "atv sport" on page 54, why did fortin make a gear set containing the same parts that broke on my quad (2nd gear, 4th gear, and the shift fork)? I will go to court to fight this if i have to, all i need to know is, what parts went when your trannys went? also, some pictures would be nice, i will try to get my parts on here as soon as possible, also anyone who has talked with yamaha and got anyware, please tell me what i can do, it is clearly a defect in the =gears, where the dogs are on the 2nd gear, the flange is soooo thin, i don't know how it lasted this long, and the sad thing is, my dealer put the same gears in that it came from(but, what else could they have done, i was expecting a warrenty repair) i wouldda done it my self with some fortin gears....also.... has anyone ever heard of this...after i got my raptor back, about 10 min. into my 1st ride, my raptor made like a quiet backfiring sound, now it has no, i repete NO compression, i can push it in 1st gear, and it makes a sound like an air compressor...would anyone know what my dealer did to my quad to make it do this....note, before it died, it was running fine, except that when i let off the gas after accelerating, it would stall....however it idled fine. thanks for any help you could provide on my tranny issue

This forum is really starting to suck. Way to slow and now two x's together are forbidden.

Checkout www.bluetrax x .com (put the word together, it was the only way I could get this post to work).

This site is putting together a list of riders with problem transmissions.

You have the classic problem with some Raptor transmissions. That 2nd gear and its three tabs causes the entire problem!! The issue is that the tabs are not backcut enough to hold the gear under the load created by a stock engine. All it takes is a few misshifts and the few sets of weak gears to start the problem. Note that Yamaha claims to have had an issue with one of its gear vendors and that is why not everyone has this problem.

On the Fortin gears, yes they are good but they are expensive $750.00 --- note that they are also starting to make 5th gear since they claim that it is prone to failure.

ON the engine running issue, a couple of things come to mind. First check the status of the carbs at the manifold -- Are you sure they are in place?? Next, the de-compressor could be hanging -- usually caused by improper assy or when the cam bolts are not properly installed. It could also be caused by a stuck valve or even a blown head gasket.

I really do not think that the trans issue is a big problem. I have not had the problem even with major hp engines. Raptors, or as you call them Craptors, are a great, fast, fun machine.
Search other posts on this topic. You will find that Yamaha is taking care of the guys that make the most noise.

Raptorman666, that is the stupidest comment I've heard. I, too, have a 2001 Raptor and haven't had any problems with the bike but I'm not about to deny that there's some problem with the tranny. Do you really think that EVERYONE with a blown '01 tranny doesn't know how to ride? The Raptor isn't a beginner quad so I'm willing to bet that 98% of all Raptor owners have had quads in the past and none of those trannies broke. Tell me, in your infinite wisdom, how many threads do you see in all the other forums about chronic blown tranny's in Warrior's, Blaster's, Banshee's, 250X's, 300EX's, 400EX's, 250R's, LT250R's, LT500R's, LT230's, DS650's, etc.? NONE. You occasionally hear about a blown tranny in some other bike but it's very few and far between. Do you honestly think that these guys ride all these other bikes for years and years and then suddenly forget how to ride when they get on the Raptor? I seriously doubt it. It sounds to me that you're scared your tranny is going to blow and it frightens you to hear other people talk about it. Got news for ya, get off the boards cause these tranny's are going to continue to let go. Ignoring this problem or talking yourself into thinking it's not a problem will not make it go away.

You've been screwed. Bitch, moan, and sue!! Contact the Better Business Bureau in your state and California where American Yamaha resides. Do it for yourself and do it for others. Yamaha needs to recall at least the first 6,000 Raptors. Hell, Polaris does it all the time, no big deal. Is your VIN # over or under 6,000?

RAPTORMAN666
That is a very inaccurate post!! I and many others on this forum have had tranny
problems and haven't been bashing the Raptor just pointing out a FACT that this IS
a problem!! Take a look at ATV Sport mag. this month, They mention Raptor
transmission problems twice in that one issue. Now granted they are talking racing, (
I won't even get into that discussion ) but when was the last time you remember
seeing one magazine even mention a bike being know for having a tranny problem let
alone mention it twice in one issue. YES do ride hard, YES I do know know how to
ride, YES I have had the tranny problem not once but TWICE within eight months,
YES I have had other performance bikes, NO I have never had a tranny problem
with another one. My dealer himself went good for my tranny the second time it
broke when Yamaha wouldn't, this leads me to believe even he thinks this is a
problem. On the other hand I ride with two other Raptors all the time and they
haven't had any problems, Yes they ride as hard as I do and one weighs 50lbs more
then I do. ( = more stress on drive train ) And Raptor720 says he hasn't had a
problem with his built bikes, so it must be a problem with a gear provider and NOT
the rider or all Raptors. In conclusion if you haven't had a problem please keep it to
yourself and don't rub it in by telling us we can't ride or abuse our bikes. Sorry for
the length but this irritates the HEII out of me!!!

Mine too bent the fork the second time, like you I assumed it was from the second
gear exploding. The first time just second and fourth gear broke. I hope you get it
covered I know Yamaha wouldn't with mine the second time.. Do a search for
Raptor transmission, you will find plenty of post you can print out.

The vin # theory does not hold water. People first were saying that only Raptors with vin #s lower than 4000 had transmission problems. Now fourlix is claiming vin #s lower than 6000. A friend of mine blew his Raptor transmission and his vin # ends with 8947, I have seen posts of Raptors with vin #s as high as 16000 with blown transmissions. As far as I am concerned the 2002 Raptors will probably blow transmissions too because Yamaha still doesn't admit that there is a problem with the 2001 Raptor transmission. If they don't think there is a problem with the 2001 Raptors transmission then they most likely have not made the gears in the 2002 Raptor any stronger. I'd be willing to bet that there are going to be 2002 Raptors with blown transmissions popping up any time now. Remember that they have only been out a few weeks now. And to you guys who come on here saying that these transmission problems are caused by rider abuse, I hope you're next.
