Raptor Tranny: time to get angry

I've been trying to think about lowering my total cost of ownership with the 2001 Raptor.
Is it most likely to be cheaper to:
1) put the Fortin gear set in prior to wasting my transmission.
2) wait to see if the transmission blows and then do it? I assume other parts will need replaced once it blows that wouldn't need replaced if I just did it now.

This is clearly a problem Yamaha needs to address. Will they? No way! Us 01 (maybe 02 as well) Raptor owners are out of luck and waiting for the other foot to drop. Is this a company that I want to deal with in the future? I don't think so.

I may be wrong but I think I remember reading somewhere that Yamaha is putting different gears in the 02's, deeper to mesh better. I think I saw it in a magazine. Sorry to hear about your troubles and I hope Yamaha backs these problems.

I don't think yamaha backs anything to be honest. i had my raptor for a week and the axle bent. I wrote to yamaha and they sent me a letter back saying they wouldnt help pick up the bill. I wouldnt have thought they would have let it get this bad, but I was wrong. if there wasn't a problem, then why were all the junk parts replaced with the new model year? Don't get me wrong, its a great machine, but you shouldn't have to go through that kind of hassle when you spend that amount of money.

I love how we haven't heard anything from Raptorman666. He hasn't come back to either retract his statement or further support it with anything that resembles a fact. It's typical, take a pot-shot in a thread and then move on. In a week from now we'll get another tranny post and this guy will be back with some factless, baseless comment again.

I have one of the first B&W 2001 Raptors (shipped to South Africa)in November 2000. I ride hard and to date (touch wood) have had no problems with my gears. I do have serous concerns though - I know of a few local guys who have blown their gears and Yamaha have not come to the party. In SA the dealers maintain that it is because guys are racing their bikes or not shifting properly or shifting without the clutch...
Why is it then that the same guys rode Warriors / Banshees / Blasters and never had tranny problems?
Why (if there is no problem) have Yamaha changed the gearing on the 2002 Raptors. They say that it offers a better power curve but I don't believe that for 1 second.
Yamaha are talking about a kit to change the '01 gearboxes to the '02 gearboxes. This is as per an official Yamaha distributor on Friday 7th December. He is coming back to me to let me know details.
Why can't Yamaha do a recall and retrofit the '02 gearboxes in the same way as Polaris or Cannondale do?
The simple answer to all these questions is that it will cost a lot of money to do this and Yamaha would rather risk a few unhappy Raptor owners that pay up for the recall.
Please remember that I am currently not affected but I do have concerns regarding the re-sale value of my '01 Raptor with the '01 gearbox.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif[/img]

I share Raptorfmf concerns,
For safety, As well as expenses.
I havn't had a tranny issue with mine. ** keeps fingers crossed **
I had a friend blow his though during a drag. His was a month older than mine.
I also have heard of a kit for the gearbox swap.
$500 + labor.
I love my raptor, but I am dissappointed in Yamaha for indirectly acknowledging a issue, Fixing it in a 2002 (( maybe )). Then now providing a kit For us to fix the issue in 2001.
The Posts Here are numerous, And like somebody mentioned The magazines even acknowledge there's a issue in the 01's.
Rather than yamaha doing the fix. They would rather us first year raptor buyers suffer with more costs. So far every dealer and yamaha mechanic Seen the problem before, But It's all do to rider abuse in there Eyes... OR should I say Cash register.
I am dissappointed in yamaha for turning there backs on the 01 customers.
