I know that removing the air box lid will increase the amount of air flow therefore improving performance, but how much, is it even noticeable. Also are there negative effect to removing the lid,, like too much dirt into the airbox, getting into the engine or at least dirting up the airfilter much quicker than usual? Also I ride a 250x if that makes a difference, and the airbox is under the seat

 

Yes it will increase performance. But, it does come at a price. Best thing to do is to drill a 2 - 3" hole towards the rear of the lid. Then use a subwoofer tube to direct the airflow to the bottom of the airbox. This will cut down on some of the dirt getting to the filter. And the filter will not take direct hits from water and dirt. Or you can use the airbox filter holes that you see on the market. I can not comment on them, I do not use them.

You will be cleaning the filter more frequently. I run 3 UNI filters for this reason. I always have 2 clean filters at all times. On real dusty days, I'll switch filters half way though the ride even. I clean mine after each ride usually. But a visual check will let you know if it needs cleaned or not.

ANd another quick tip. If you are going to run a foam filter, buy the Honda filter oil in a bottle. Not the spray type. You can not get even distibution with the spray on oil. Just get your hands dirty and get the bottled stuff.

SWEET IDEA !!!!!!! Tomorow after school I am going to my other house and doing that to me airbox, I have been looking for a trick looking way to vent the airbox and now thanks to you I got a way!! thanks dude !!

 

hey dtrain i have a 98 stock 300ex i removed my airbox once or twice and yes it does give u better performance but on mine it dosent seem to fully wind out like as in hitting rev limiter (in 5th gear) but when its on it, it hits just fine.

 

^ thats because it wasn't properly jetted for running without the lid.

 

Just install 4 of those filtered plugs that you by from most atv catalogs.Youll get better performance and you wont have to deal with jetting

 

HUH? Don't have to worry about jetting? Anytime you increase your airflow....your going increase the fuel consumption. So you'll have to re-jet to allow more fuel into the combustion chamber. That's if you don't want to be running lean and burning up rings.
