Speed when stock, about equal. The 500 MAY have just a tiny bit more top speed, but the 400 being lighter, is more nimble.
Modified, it is the 400, all the way.

Reliability - about the same, but a modified 400 will need more TLC than a stock one.

Durability - this goes to the 500. The 400 is not prone to frequent breakdowns, but keep in mind a 4 cycle engine will have a longer life between rebuilds than a 2 cycle. However, it is much cheaper to rebuild a 2 cycle.

I thought 400 two strokes were fast this past weekend i came across a tricked out 400 (piped & jetted) and my 02 grizzly box stock dusted his a$$ several times in a race of about 100-150 yards
I jumped on the line and pulled away the whole way I was surprised

I have to agree with Farmr123... I think the 400 would be faster. I like my 500 but think it would get beat. And I also have to agree with man4922 I get tired of people coming into these forums and going way off the beaten path.... Just my Two Cents

I have both a 400 and a 500 and I would say that they are very equal until you factor the pipe I added to my 400. It will now eat the 500 top speed. They are right about the 400 being more nimble and usually I will choose that quad over the other even though the other one is almost brand new.(I'm not as scared about braking something, because I like to ride rough) One thing you need to remember and i didn't figure this out unitl I had both is that top speed really doesn't matter that much unless your consistantly racing. The 500 is a very quit, smooth, and powerful ride that is unbeatable when up in the mountains, mudding, or just cruzing around with the family. Both are awsome and I think I placed the exact same post when I was looking to by a 500 but I realized that top speed isn't as big of a factor. Just thought I would tell you I was in the same boat at one time.
