I am looking at buying a 1998 Polaris Sport 400. I was wondering if this is the pre-concentric or post-concetric model? What year did they switch the swingarm for the concentric models?

ttaylor,

The '98s amd below are the pre-concentric drive models. The '99s and up are the concentric drive models. From everything I've read, the pre-concentric drive models are just as reliable as the post concentric drive models. The only thing to watch out for is to get a chain tensioner for either model. There have been a few reports of chains snapping on the concentric drive models.

Actually, they came out with concentric drive in '98. I'm not sure if all '98s produced had it but my '98 has concentric drive.

Some Scramblers had concentric in '98, Sports did not. If you are interested in a super nice '99 400 down in AZ let me know.

I have a '98 Sport and it is not a concentric drive. Crawdad is right...I believe that the Scramblers in '98 had concentric drives, but the sports didn't until '99.

FYI my '98 Sport is for sale for $2300. Perfect shape.

I was, of course, refering specifically to the Sport models in the above post. They seemed to be the "red-headed" step child of the Polaris line. They never got the long travel front suspension that the rest of the Scrambler line had until 1999. Then they didn't get the Scrambler lights until this year (2001).

Now it appears that the Trailblazer is the "red-headed" step child of the family. I wonder when Polaris will see fit to give it the up grades it's bigger brothers have? It only makes sense from a fiscal standpoint. One set of parts = less money. Then they can drop the prices back to it's original $3000.
