I have just bought a used, stock banshee. I have heard of people dropping to a 13 tooth front sprocket for woods riding. Does this cause excess wear on the chain or on anything else?

NO its shouldnt cause any excess wear, if properly adjusted. A 13 tooth front sprocket will help in woods riding, as it will give a bit more bottom end, as apposed to the 14 tooth (if your quad is an 89 or newer)
