2001 Sportsman Super Utility Diesel
#1
I have found the above wheeler for sale. The owner has become disable and wants to sell it for $4500. The ride has 4 hours and a Warn 2500lb winch. My problem is the diesel motor. Is this a good motor? Does it pull and haul good? How fast is it? How does it compare to the 500 Sportsman? How is it for trail riding? I do alot of towing with my Scrambler 500 and it is getting expensive replacing belts every few weeks. I also do trail riding and that is where my Scrambler shines. I will be getting rid of the Scrambler if I buy this, I just don't want to be dissapointed.
Thanks

Don't expect to keep up with a Scambler or a Sportsman 500 (or any other ATV with a gas engine)! The diesel is similar to the Sportsman 500 in that it has the same suspension. But its a little heavier, and geared for work. Its not a particularly good trail machine due to its limited speed range.

Neighbor had a diesel. Would pull about anything, or climb any hill you felt brave enough to try as far as power was concerned. He never had a problem with it. Rode about as good as a Sportsman, but perhaps a little stiffer. Now the downside. Was harder (but not impossible) to start in cold weather. Started down to freezing easy, and down to about 10* tolerably well, but below that, you had to plug in the block heater.
Also, it was S L O W !!! If you drag raced an ATC 110, it would be a close one!! The main difference was the diesel accelerated the same uphill, downhill, riding double, pulling a trailer, etc. If I remember right top speed was somewhere between 35 and 40, and it took a while to get there.

As a JD Diesel mechanic I would enjoy getting my hands on one of these and putting a small turbo on it with open exhaust. The turbo would increse power by about 40% and would give it a cool "turbo whistle". An increase in fuel delivery and some more rpm would make it move faster too.
I have seen these ATV's at tractor pulls as the "pull back" machine to pull 10,000 lbs. tractors back to the pits. Can you say hard working machine?

Hard working is right. They are incrediable. But that is just it. They are made for all work and very little play. That is why they did not sell too hot, and are rather slow. They were basically marketed toward farmers, construction companies and the like.
