i have been looking for my first set of riding boots i think ive narrowed it down to these Alpinestars m-4,and ONeal M 840. what i want to know is are the any good. i'm really instreted inthe ankel suport because they hurt when im jumping. i'm kind of leaning tawards the Alpinestars they seem to be the better of the two. if any one has a nother kind i should look at let me know and i dont want to spend more than 150-170 bucks.

I have been riding with Alpinestar's for the past 2 years. Very good boots except for the motorcross tread design on the bottom. I bought them when I was riding dirt bikes and you need a smoother tread design when putting your foot down to the ground. For riding quads, I wish they had a bit more tread. One to hold better on the footpegs and two when getting off to tug and pull the quad around.
I just got a new pair of MSR World Tour boots with the ATV tread design from Rocky Mountain ATV. I can't report on whether or not they are better since I haven't ridden with them yet. However, they feel as comfortable as the Alpinestar's and seem to offer adequate ankle protection. The tread design should definitely help out too.
My girlfriend rides in Gaerne Balancer boots. These are definitely good boots but are in the $239 price range. Not sure they offer quite as much ankle protection but I bet they are the most comfortable boot you can buy. They are made for trials riding (the motorcycles without the gas tanks, etc. that scale up waterfalls, etc.). They are fairly flexible up top but still offer good protection when landing from jumps. My concern with them is how they would protect the ankle if you fell off at speed coming down from a missed jump.
Hope this helps.
