Hey there people, I just bought a 99' 400EX. (previously bought a new 2001, but had to sell shortly after) This bike came from phoenix, 0-200 feet elevation. Now she lives at 5000+ feet in Prescott, AZ. It has a WB Eseries pipe, and possibly different jetting? It seems a little hesitant to start when cold. Could this be caused by different jetting? Especially if the bike was jetted for 0' elevation.

Any suggestions?

Also, about the fuel petcock, what position is RESERVE? pointing UP or DOWN? (I forgot, its been a while since I owned my other 400)

down is on, up is reserve. 400's are always resistant to start when their cold. changing the jetting might help however.

 

If the bike is running at high elevation- you will need larger jetting size. I'm at 5500 feet in Utah- and run a 165 main jet. I'm running a little rich- so I'd reccomend dropping 1 jet size.

As for cold starting- the 400ex suffers... they ALL do. This should help:
1. Raise your idle speed.
2. Pump the gas 3 times
3. Crank the engine for 10 seconds.
If it doesn't start-... repeat steps 2 & 3 until it does.

I keep my quad in the garage with no insulation- so the engine is 30 degrees when I start it. I can usually have it going in less than 2 minutes.
