Hi, i found your board today, looks great. First off I'm going to purchase an ATV, most likely a Polaris. Anyway, my uncle made a loan on a 2001 Trail Boss 325. It's basically brand new. I have a chance to get it very cheap, the problem is that it has been sitting in storage for months. If I get it, what would be the first "tune-up" thing you would do to it. Whats there to check?

(I'm coming from a dirt-bike background and honestly I know nothing about the service of a 4-wheeler.)

If it's been sitting for awhile, I would drain the gas out of the tank due to water condensation and the carb. Check the battery and spark plug (any doubt about the plug just put a new one in) Grease all the zerks and check the oil and maybe change it. Also check the chain, if it sits for awhile some of the links could rust up and not move. Lube it up and try to move each link, if some don't move get a new chain. These are the main things to look for, so after checking them have fun on your new ride and don't let anyone put you down for what you ride, they are all good quads.

Trailbosses use a very high pressure oil system. For the price difference I'd go with the Polaris stuff; otherwise use a light/thin high-quality synthetic.

Just so you know, their is service bulletin for the trailboss's. If it is an 01 or older, you need to make sure the oil lines were replaced. If they have not then get ahold of your local dealer to have this preformed.

As for the maintenance on the 2001 trail boss, I would change the oil and filter, change the chaincase oil (gearbox), grease the machine, drain the gas, and lube the chain real well. Also, I would remove the brakes and inspect the pads so you know how wore they are.

As for the oil, Polaris recommends a 0W40. If I was going to use Mobil 1, I would use 5W30 or 10W40 (Mobil 1 doesn't offer a 0W40). Amsoil is offering a 0W40 and it is a little cheaper than Polaris's. As for filter, you can get them from the Polaris dealer (for around $9) or order you an Emgo filter from Rocky Mountain or Dennis Kirk. The Emgo are basically the same filter at half the price. As for grease, I use Mobil 1 synthetic grease as it is waterproof and resist breaking down. Whatever you use, be sure it is water resistant or your seals will be full of water. As for the chain case (gear case), you should use the Polaris Chaincase oil as there really isn't anything on the market similar to this oil. As for the service bulletin recall on the oil lines, look at the oil lines coming off of the oil filter area. If they are hydrylic hose type fittings, then you have the new style. If you have rubber hoses held on with pressure hose clamps, then you have the old style and they need to be updated. You most likely have the new style, but should check anyway. Hope this helps.

magnum, thanks for the information. I went last night to the shop and was looking at it from what I can tell it appears to have the updated oil lines. I'm a big fan of mobil 1(i use it in everything) so if I do, I'll probably go with the 5W-40.
