<< Screw in your test gauge, sure it is reading 0. Hold the throttle wide open and start kicking. >>
Oh yeah, that's right to. Forgive my ignorance, but how come you need to hold the throttle in? I have been wondering for a while.

By holding WFO throttle you let the engine suck in the full amount of air while kicking. Full air will make sure you get the max/most consistent readings. If the throttle isn't open you won't be able to draw in the full amount of air and get a lower compression reading.
