I noticed something weird the other day. when I had my Raptor sitting in the garage, I pushed it out in neutral without starting it. When I wanted to get it back into the garage, I started it, put it in gear and it lurched forward. No big deal because it was cold and not warmed up. Then I shut her down for some reason and just tried pushing it into the garage while in gear with the clutch pulled in and the motor off. It acted like I didn't even have the clutch pulled in and wouldn't roll. Is this normal? If I start it, pull in the clutch, put it in gear and then shut it down without letting go of the clutch, it will roll. Then if I let the clutch out and pull it in again still with the engine off, it won't roll. Is this just another characteristic of a wet clutch, or at least a cold wet clutch? Does the clutch actually need engine RPM to disengage fully or something, unlike a car? It does fine out on the trail, but I'm just curious as to whether or not this is normal. Thanks.

mine does the same thing. warm it up and it isnt a problem. adjusting the clutch cable may help, loosen the locking nut and then turn the adjuster at the lever out until the symptom stops. shouldnt be more than a few turns.

I havent done mine yet, havent been riding

I too posed this same question to the forum after installing my new clutch lever. The answer was that its the nature of the wet clutch. Ok. Then why does my buddies 400ex and Warrior move when the clutch lever is pulled and the machine is cold?

This behavior (lurching when put in gear)may be normal in some raptors but not with anyone I know or ride with out here, hard to push with the clutch in while in gear is normal. Be careful about the type of oil you are using, and the weight-->the wrong lube could be causing this kind of problem. make sure your clutch is properly adjusted, and in the cold your clutch cable may be just a bit shorter than when it is warmed up (metal shrinks in the cold) any of these could be part of the problem or just your individual bike

Mine too has done this since day 1. Adjust the clutch any way you want and change oil brands all you want.......still won't fix the drag.

Ok, listen my raptor did the SAME thing, i thought it was normal, then I installed a barnett clutch kit, now it dosen't move at all!...The raptor's stock clutches are junk, and shifting+Driving with a sticking clutch could ruin your allready weak tranny

Help me out 660R. I don't understand your post. When you say it doesn't move at all, which situation are you talking about? When you first shift it into gear when cold it doesn't jump forward? Or, when you pull the clutch with the engine off and try to push the quad? Also, I have an Alba clutch with Barnett springs and it still does this. I think it has to do with the cold. It has been really cold here in Texas, like close to freezing, and it is doing this only when first started or not warmed up. Today its a lot warmer so I'm thinking it won't jump as much but I'll see today.

I really don't think it is anything to do with the stock clutches being junk. They may be junk (which is why I replaced mine) but I don't think that this is abnormal behavior, after reading this forum. Thanks guys.

I went to the Yamaha dealership at lunch. I put a brand new 2002 Raptor on the showroom floor into gear, pulled the clutch, and it didn't roll either. Sounds like this is a normal condition for a Raptor when it is cold. Thought everyone would like to know who posted in this thread.

I usually don't leave mine in gear after riding it. When I stop and I go to shut it down I usually drop it into neutral. Then I apply the parking brake. So if I need to more it around in the garage I just pop the brake and it rolls. I have noticed that when the machine is cold and warming up and you put it in gear it will learch a little but that is about it.

My biggest problem is the locking what ever you want to call it at the clutch perch keeps vibrating loose and I have to keep checking if the other screw is backing out and throwing the clutch adjustment out.
