I finished some research where you don't have to pay $12 for an oil filter for the 2001-2002 500cc Cats. These filters will work and can be obtained from your local AutoZone from $4-$6.

So you have to use factory oil and factory air and factory gas. I don't buy it. Every car owner in America is voiding warantees.
Thanks for Napa. The list is complete. We can buy 3 filters for the price factories one. K@N makes a filter also but it too is listed for $12.

Now I'm working on platinum plugs so far no one makes one.

If I had known that I could have saved me money on the first oil change. I let the dealer do it because it was still under warranty. I thought that if I did it myself and used a Fram or other oil filter that it would void my warranty. Now I change the oil myself and use the Fram Filters and quaker state semi synthetic oil.

Thanks for the info

I would think that it would being it's the same engine. I can't verify it through the parts books yet because the Vinson is not yet listed.

I'm working on a $4.50 jet kit. K@N offers a $70 jet kit which is nothing more than 6 jets and an adjustable needle. K@N's website gives you the instructions which is nothing more than determining your elevation and installing the proper jet and clip position. This is claimed to give you a 5% net gain and better overall response.

The manufactures jet these things for an average of all elevation thus giving K@N something to enhance performance. The extra jets provide for a pipe and aircleaner upgrade. The jet size is given on the instructions for this mod too.

I'm trying to figure out what the stock jet and needle position of a 2002 500 is.

The Vinson and Q-Master should use the same oil filter, I know the Q-Master does.
As far as the stock jet sizes. Here's what the manual says.

Keihin CVK34
Main jet: 148
Slow jet: 38
Jet needle: N601
Needle Jet: 6.0/4.0
Starter Jet: 102
Pilot screw: 2.25 turns

You can get the jets from your dealer, or other cycle shop. I've heard the K&N jets are drilled different and a K&N 150 jet won't be the same as a 150 Keihin jet. Also heard that the needle jet isn't adjustable on this carb. It doesn't show it being adjustable in the book.

Do the 400s take the same filter as the 500s?

Thank you MudCat! That's all I need to know. I've heard the jets are different and needed too to know about the needle. I can purchase an adjustable needle from a reputable carb company and match the height with stock and raise or lower the adjustable needle a washer thickness. As for jetting. I believe the factoy jets these things to service 3000 to 6000ft. The unit will basically run any where in the U.S. I live at an elevation of 1500. Which should require a leaner jet.

K@N suggest using a Dynojet #132 below 3000 ft
#128 3000 to 6000 ft
#124 6000 ft and above

With header: #136 below 3000 ft
#132 3000 to 6000 ft
#128 6000 ft and above
Pilot Screw, 3 turns out
Needle, below 5000 ft, groove #4, above 5000 groove #3. (from top)

What do others think about this?

IowaBob, the catalogs show the same filter part # for 1998-2002 400, 454, 500, AC's

I live at 600 feet and all the quads that I've had, seem to be a little on the rich side.
I don't know much about the changes in elevation affecting jetting. I think that the higher you go the leaner your jetting will get or you need to install a bigger jet to make your mixture richer. Is this correct? My thinking seems to be backward to the instructions from K&N. Maybe you high ground dwellers can help me out? I know how to check the plug to get it correct, but not sure of the affects of elevation on jetting.

The oil filter is the same on the 375 too.
