I just bought this Quad from a guy. It was really fast for one day. Then the Reverse quit working. Then to day it would not start. I noticed today as well that the arm is slightly bent. What should I do with this Quad. I only payed 800 for. The motor is great, Sus pension good, body good , everything except what I mention is in good shape. Which arm is bent?
$800 is pretty cheap, if it is otherwise good. Heck it is probably cheap as long as it RUNS!
What is it doing? More details would help. Does the shift lever move, but not do anything, or does it feel like it is sticking? Does the lever seem to hit the end of travel, but not shift the linkage far enough? Does it grind gears?
If it is just stiff, look at the 'box' the shift arm goes into. Remove the screws from the top that hold the boot on. There should be a little oil in there. If not, add a little oil, any cheapo motor oil is good enough. Fill it up to just about cover the rod that comes out the back. If it leaks around that rod, there is an O-ring in there that needs to be replaced. Un-bolt the linkage rod end from the rod that comes out of the shifter body, remove the top cover & shift lever, and pull the rod out the back. There will be an O-ring in the body where the rod came out of. Use a dental pick, or piece of wire to get the old O-ring out, put in the new one, smear a little oil on it, and put it together the way it came apart. This works often if it is just stiff. If it grinds gears, and won't go, it is likely idling too fast, or the clutch is dragging for one reason or another.
Sometimes, they won't go into reverse simply because the shift dogs are not lined up right. Kind of like trying to run a manual shift machine through the gears with the enging off, sometimes it just won't go. Try revving up the engine a tiny bit, then shifting again, or getting off the machine, and rolling it back & forth a little while tugging on the shift lever.
By will not start, do you mean with the electric starter, or not at all? The 2-cycle 400 engines kind of have a weak starter. If it won't crank, first check the battery, be sure it has 12 volts, and go from there. If it cranks & doesn't start, be sure the choke cable isn't broken, or mis-adjusted before you tear into it any deeper. Also be sure it isn't out of gas. If the carb float needle is leaking, it can drain the gas out of the tank, and into the engine. Doesn't happen often, but it can. It is a mess to clean up, but not too expensive to fix.
If you can give me more details on what it is doing, I can be MUCH more specific.

Walexa, I stand corrected. Thanks for straightening me out. I worked on Magnums, a Sportsman, and Xplorers. All of those had a shift box with 2 linkage rods coming out of them. I never worked on a Scrambler, and like a dummy I assumed that it used a similar box.
Theonlywaytofly - I trust Walexa was giving accurate info. I just screwed up on what kind of shift linkage it had.
As far as I know, the rest of my advice should be OK.
Sorry if I confused.
