fourjs,

If you like the brake on the right side instead of the left, and would like more braking power, order a whole new master cylinder for a Honda 400ex. It is very strong, and if your scrambler hose that goes to the master cylinder has the banjo fitting, it will bolt right up to the new one without any modifications. I did this to my Xplorer 400, and I like it. I can ride my kids, hold onto them with my left arm, and control gas and braking with my right hand. www.servicehonda.com is the best place to order honda parts, and I looked up all the parts there you will need, and it came to $62. Hope this helps.

Just curious of what symptoms you are having? A friend of mine is having brake issues (00 SC500) that I believe are because of master cylinder failure. It started out that he has to pump the brake 2 or more times to get the brakes to work. Now the piston thing-a-ma-gig does not come all the way back out leaving the lever very loose.

We are in the same boat wondering if we can rebuild the master cylinder.

I have the same issue, I have to pump my lever twice or more for my brakes to work. I never really paid attention to it, but maybe It needs to be bleed.

Same symptoms as the others, have to pump handle twice to get good braking, i had the problem for a while, installed a split brake kit, the right is for the front brakes, stops on a dime, the left is for the rear brake, don't work to good, bleed rear brake twice, took master cylinder off bar, to help with the bubbbles, even tied the brake handle close on the bar and left overnight hopeing this would help get the bubbles out, I'm not sure if the pistion returns fully or not, but it could be the o-ring or something in the master cyclinder, we ride mostly in the dunes, and front brakes work fine, but you can only use them in cetain situations, and you really need your rear brake to stop you, it's hard to train your brain to let go of the brake to pump it twice when your trying to stop from going over a hill to fast, haha

crawdad - was the replacement the kit or the entire master cyclinder??

Thanks for all the replys.... ..

rotor wobble will also cause you to need to pump the brakes twice because it pushes the piston back into the calipher.

Fourjs, I just replaced the whole unit. My rear brake unit was shot too so I replaced that at the same time along with all new brake pads.
I had been having the spongy brake lever too and my rear brake pedal was useless. After completely losing my brakes while going down a huge, steep hill I realized it doesn't matter how fast I can get the thing to run if I can't get it stopped.
I decided it was time to put the braking system in order. After the overhaul the difference is night & day. Front lever and back pedal are both rock solid and I can now stop in the middle of any hill with no worry about it rolling.

Periodic bleedings (start with the brake farthest away) will help cycle out the air and accumulated moisture in the system. Don't know if that's the cause, but it's simple and inexpensive.
