I have a 98 sp500 bought it used and the speedodometer key to the transmission keeps braking it only cost 7.00$ at the local dealer and is easy to fix but still a pain does any one have any suggestions as to why it keeps happening. And is there a long term fix.

Sorry, but what is a "speedometer key to the transmission?" I couldn't quite figure out what you were referring to.

If you follow the cable to the transmission housing, there is a connector to the tranny, the key as the dealer calls it goes just inside, and is not much bigger than 15mm and just barely bigger than a sewing needle in diameter.

...know what you're going thru superduty, I replaced the little pin in my '96 about 5 times, when I finally figured out one of the first ones broke off in the little gear reduction that bolts onto the side. I bought a new one, greased it up real good, and it has held in there the longest. I'd like to tell you a long term fix, but I think this is where Polaris makes their most money....

One question Big Daddy did you replace the gear reduction unit or just grease it real good an replace the pin. And thank you for answering me.

The angle drive probably has moisture in it and is freezing up then it twists of the key. Take it in the house dry it out then use lithiume greese, lube it up real good then reinstall. That should fix the problem moisture is a killer on them, plus take out your inside of your speedo cable then clean that a relube. Then reinstale that should take care of the problem.
