Ok well.. It appears as though I might have the coin for a Raptor..

What I'm wondering is should I get a new (higher serial number) 01' Raptor or just go with the 02's? Are there ANY reports of 02's with the same tranny issue's as the 01??? I'm not about to spend 5,300 on a new fourwheeler, have the tranny go out and then be shafted when I need to pay 1,100 for a new one...

I can on the other hand get an 02' Rappy for 5,800 out the door... $500 bucks more, but that's better than 1,100..????

Grrr.. Maybe I should just get a Scrambler 500 4x4.

Anyone? Are the Raptor 01 tranny's that bad??

I have not had one single problem with my raptor, none of the reports I read on here have happened to me (knocking on wood).

With that said, If I were in your shoes I would get the 2002. Then I would not have to worry. I know that there is probably an inherent problem with the 01 tranny design, but there are a lot of them running around without a problem also.

Buy the 2002 and dont worry. The only thing I have heard about with the 2002 is chains breaking. I dont know if there is some problem with them or they are not adjusted properly or what, but that is the only prob I have heard of.

Hope that helps

I have one of the first 01 Raptors that came to Oregon. Never had a problem. But if I were going to buy a 2nd machine, I'd opt for the 2002. The gearing on the 2001 is not spot on, with a rather large gap between 1st and 2nd. I've geared down to make the bike more manageable in the woods, but it's still not what I'd like it to be.

So the gearing of the 02' is more suited for the woods also? Eliminating the gap between 1 and 2?

I just bought a 02' raptor. My reason being, I heard of the tranny problem with the 01, weaker rear axel and also the gear issue. I bought the 02' because they have eliminated alll of these problems. I also put on the White Bros. Pipe and rejetted. What a differnce. It REALLY moves now.
If I were you, I would stick with the 02', less to worry about !

The gap is fixed for '02, along with a stronger axle, too. $5800 is a damn good price for a new Raptor!!! That sounds a little low to me... I paid $6800 out the door on mine, but I guess that was also November of 2000 when Raptors were still brand new...
