Raptor or FMF piped Shee?
#1
I'm going to the Oregon Dunes this weekend with a couple of guys running Banshee's with FMF pipes, I'm riding my 01 Raptor. They are otherwise stock, may have K&N but no internal work. I run a Big Gun slip on, K&N pro flow-no airbox lid, and dynojet jet kit. Should I quit the trash talk while I'm ahead or should this be a fair match-up? I really dont want to lose the drag races with these guys. I'll never hear the end of it. Any other suggestions? I've thought of armor all treating their seats, but that wouldnt be very sporting... I don't know man, sounds like a pretty good match-up to me. If they were all stock Banshees then I would say that you wouldn't have a problem. I can beat stock Banshees with my 400ex. The mods that I have are listed below. Since some of the Banshees have FMF pipes and I am assuming paddle tires as well, if you have paddle tires also you should be fine. It's all about getting a good start, and then getting to the highest gear the fastest. Along with getting a good start, try to keep your front end down.

Mr45auto.....you should be very close performance wise with a piped 'shee. If these Banshee's have small additional mods (reeds....shaved head....timing key), then they will be more likely to take you....assuming everyone is jetted correct.
<< I can beat stock Banshees with my 400ex. The mods that I have are listed below >>
The mods (pipe and k&n kit) indicate you are probably pushing about 30hp. Thats impressive for your machine to be spanking stock Banshees. Even more impressive to be doing it in hp sucking sand.

Fourtracker14,
You must be racing some inexperience riders on those stock banshees. My buddy and I raced last weekend and we were tied right down to the finish. I beat him by half a quad length once and we tied the other time. He has a 400ex bored to 440, racing camshaft, white brothers e-series pipe, jet kit, k&N, high compression pistons, some port work done on the engine, and is running 113 octane. When I raced my other buddy with a stock 400ex and white bros. pipe and k&n with my stock shee, it was no contest.

Hey fella's I don't mean to create an issue about me being able to take stock Banshees. I honestly was expecting them to beat me. Not by much, but I have ridden a stock Banshee once and I was very impressed with the high-strung performance that they put out.
I know that the sand soaks up a lot of HP, but I have a set of paddle tires that I put on my 400ex. I can't say if the riders that were riding stock Banshees that I beat were experienced or inexperienced. But lets face it, a stock Banshee is fast. Tricked-out Banshees are even more frightening.
You guys don't have to believe me when I tell you this which is your choice, but last summer when I was riding at Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan, I was keeping up with Raptors too. I could run side-by-side with them up until I hit 4th gear. Thats when the Raptor would pull away from me. I have proof to back this up too. I had my friends Dad videotape it all. I unfortunately don't have it posted on the Internet though.
I'm not trying to say that I am the fastest rider out there that rides a 400ex. I am just saying what seriously happened last summer. I don't know, maybe I was just lucky. Then again, maybe not. I guess it all depends on the fact that you have to see it to believe it.
Both all of you and I know that both the Raptor, and the Banshee are incredible machines. My next machine that I plan on getting is going to be a Raptor. However, I still like my 400ex. I think that it is a great quad to have.

I raced a Raptor right before i put my pipes on a couple weeks ago. I have a boost bottle and K&N filter on a fresh top end. He couldn't keep up with me off the line, so we had to start the race while we were both moving in 3rd gear . He gained on me by a length, until i hit fifth and we were even again through the rest of the race. Granted he is 60lbs. fatter than i am, but our top speeds were dead even. The race was on a paved airport landing strip.
I figure i should be able to take him now with the pipes.....that's if i can get the Hooptie jetted properly....See Banshee Backfiring/Sputtering post.

I think it would be a good race to see but I think the banshees will over take the raptor unless you get a really good start, or the banshee riders are inexperianced. keep us posted it would be nice to hear the results.

mr45auto, it will be a good close race assuming all machines are in a good state of tune.
fourtracker14, I would like to buy your 400ex. It's gotta be the fastest 400ex in existence. Just kidding on both parts. Actually, I believe you about the Banshee races. Next time, though, you need to wait until the Banshee or Raptor shifts out of first gear before you really call it a race.

In fourtrackers defense, I have a friend with a bone stock 400ex. And in A shorter field. Racing from a dead stop until I can just get my DS into 4th gear. He could take the piped and stock Banshees. here why. He would jump any of the Banshees off the line. Every single time he would jump out a couple bike lengths right off the line and the Banshees had to catch him. But since the field was short the Banshees didnt have enough room to run him down.He would end up about a nose or so ahead of them. When those high powered Banshees would spin thier tires trying to get tration through the 1st and 2nd gear the 400 would allready hae a couple bike lengths on them. I have seen it. As for the fmf Piped banshee and the mild mod Raptor. It sounds pretty even. If you can drive good I would give the Edge to the Raptor.
