Since I was going to do a little mud hopping tomorrow I wanted to tighten the rear chain a bit. My adjustment was all the way and the chain is real loose still. How do I cut a link out? I removed the clip on the master link but the rest of the link does not want to come apart... any suggestions?

Need help fast!

O Ring chains do tend to "stick" together after a while. I've used a C clamp with a large socket (big enough to clear the length of the master link) on the back side to get the master link started moving.

You might want to look at the condition of your sprockets while you are doing this - they could be the cause of your excessive slack.

You are in need of a chain tool. Basically a hand-held press that pushes the pin out of one of the links. Most shops will do this for you. If not, Rocky MTN and Dennis Kirk have them. Takes only a couple of minutes. If you've supplied them with barley pop in the past, they'll probably do it for free. I love "milk and cookie socials"....also known as Miller Time.

Sorry for the ramblin'

another cheap solution to take out links is you grind off the little nipple thing on the link that you want to take off and then just take a press and pound the nipple thing though the link.

I did the grinder thing and removed a link but now for some reason the chain is too short! Thats just my luck. The chain is 4 years old and so is the rear sprocket so I may just change them both. The sprocket seems very pointed and used. Is a chain and rear sprocket very expensive?

Thanks.

Whenever you run out of adjustment, your chain is too streched out,and must be replaced,or it may break, and take some other parts with it.Sounds like sprocket time, too, if they are all pointed. A sprocket will be about 25 - 30 bucks,a good oring chain will be about 70 - 90 bucks, but the price depends on where you order from.

Try Rockymountain and you should be able to get the chain and sproket for around $60.
