Clutch setting on 300 4x4 ?
#1
Hello all,
I'm trying to figure out the setting of the clutch adjusting screw on the side of the case. What are you all finding to be a decent setting? I just purchased this 1999 Honda 300 4x4. The previous owner had the clutch setting maxed out, the quad jumped into gear, didnt feel correct to me. I backed it off to 1/2 turn out from loose setting. Just wondering what everyone else has found with this adjustment.
Thanks for any help.

Can't help you with the clutch adjustment, but anytime i see a post where someone mentions buying a 300, i just feel like dropping in to say that it's one helluva bike....i sold mine and have regretted it ever since....you don't appreciate how good and reliable they actually are until you have something else...good luck with it!!

Taken from 98 TRX300FW FOURTRAX 300 4x4 owners manual Page 112
Make sure the ignition switch is Off
Loosen the lock nut, and turn the clutch adjuster counterclockwise until you feel slight resistance.
Then turn the adjuster 1/4 turn clockwise, and tighten the lock nut to hold the adjuster in this position.
After adjustment, start the egine and test ride the FORTRAX to be sure the clutch is operating properly.
I have about 350 hours on mine and have never adjusted the clutch and still seems ok.

Textwell sirs! I can't really help but I would like to point out that my 91 honda 300 4X4 is great, clutch is great, and I have never moved that adjustment a milimeter. I don't know why people feel compelled to fix something that isn't broke. I know it wasn't your fault and Im sympathising with you

Thanks all for the welcome to my new machine. I just baught it last week. It is in
pretty much mint shape. It has less than 20 hours on it, and also has a nice snow plow too.
I'm very happy to have paid $3,500 fot it, after about a year of wanting a 4x4 type quad.
I spent about 5 months looking up data and opinions on honda 4x4's. I really wanted a
2002 Foreman S, but that was going to cost $5400 to $5800 at local dealers.
It would be nice to have the 2/4 wheel selector ability. But after looking for a used Honda 4x4, i found that they keep their resale value well..(just like honda cars). So, it wouldn't have been much more for a brand new quad. Then i decided that a almost brand new, best quad ever designed, now piece of history, good all-around working quad........for only $3,500....was a great deal !
I'm very happy i was able to find one in such good shape, the color i wanted...RED, and yet only 2.5 hours drive from my house. I was the first caller the guy had. Found it on traderonline.com He put the ad in Friday, i saw it friday night, called him sat morning, told him i was very intrested in it....if it was in good shape...met him 4 days later, he got 4 more calls...all denied cause he was a nice guy and let me have the first chance since i called first and was driving from opposite side of the state. I had a large smile on my face when i
paid him and drove away! I feel lucky to own this awesome quad.
About the clutch, i was wondering if there was any difference in anyones settings. Since there is such an adjustment, i was not sure if it had any specific tolerence to set it correctly. I didnt want to set it too aggresively and cause undue ware and strain. As it seems it was set when i first rode it. Actually i did read the manual which was still fresh in the factory plastic bag, never opened. When i turned the adjustment down to the stated factory setting...
it seemed to be correctly engadging with not so much lurching and pounding into gear kind of feeling. So i was wondering if this adjustment allows for some quick setting if it starts to wear and you need to get back home off the trail....like it was a setting to slam the clutch into engadging. That is the reason i was wondering why there was such a range of adjustment for something that dosnt seem to need to be adjusted at all. If that makes any since.
Also, does anyone know if there a website dedicated to Honda 300 4x4 owners? (Like the 250R one)
Thanks for all you help and welcomes.

The specification that Chet gave you is the only clutch adjustment you can do. You could tighten it more, but it would only cause your clutch plates to wear more and possibly even cause them to stay engaged at all times.
If this adjustment doesn't help, the plates are either to worn for the adjustment, and need replacing OR your centrifugal clutch shoes are worn past their limits OR both clutch sets are in need of replacing.
