can woodruff key be removed from crank on 85 atc 250r
#1
I finnally figured out why my atc won't start, the woodruff key(keeps flywheel from spinning on crank) is worn flat and the flywheel does not spin with crank, I can not seem to remove it, is this a replaceable item or is it part of the crank shaft? anyy info would help

replaceable item...
had a similar thing happen on a dirt bike years ago..except it chewed the pin up worse..but it was on the primary drive..I had a new keyway cut in it & went again..
I'd try the following...
1) if you did'nt want to deal with it see if a auto machine shop could take it out, or a bike shop, ask a auto mechanic, lawn mower mechanic, ask for ideas, etc...
2) if you want to deal with it..maybe you can tap it out with a punch, a woodruf key is a half moon shaped key so you may be able to work it back & forth to loosen it..try a little 3 in 1 oil or penetrating lubricant..chances are that it is gummed up to the side of the crank..
3) if that didn't work carefully cut through the center of it with a dremel tool, the key should be softer than the crank..then take each half of it out...you'll get more clearance to work
4) if all else fails..stop before you bugger it up worse..
Like the wicked witch of the west said in the wizard of Oz " These things must be done deliacately"
of course I havent done the above procedure..so take the advice "AS IS"

It is removable. You could spray a litte liquid wrench on it and let it soak for an hour or so and try to tap on one end of it with an appropriate puunch. Make sure you are very careful when you are doing this, and make sure you are on the key, not the crank with the entire tip of the punch. No framing hammer, something a lot smaller, and work slowly. You should also make sure that the rest of it is not stuck in the flywheel or rattling around in the ignition cover. Honda P/N 13331-360-000, KEY, WOODRUFF SPECIAL (25X14), 1 required, cost about 2 bucks. You should be sure to make sure your crank and flywheel are not damaged from spinning on the crankshaft instead of turning with it. If the parts are worn, your repair will be only temporary, as it will break again quickly.
