With equal mods the 250R will still win, with equal riders.

Not true IMO.

Equal riders on both and they will be dead even. (not stock vs. stock)
The EX can be made just as great of a motoxer as the R can.

ha, i have a fully modified 400ex set up for mx racing and when i rode a stock r on a mx track i was pulling the same lap times on the bone stock r as my 400. 250r's will alwayz be the king in my opinion.

The main reason the R many be better on the track than a ex or even a Dale is the lighter weight and the compression braking.

I didn't think this was that important (compression braking)until I rode a 400ex at a track. I was used to coasting up the jump lip then gunning it right before I land to stiffen the suspension and adjust the pitch of the bike, as well as getting is good forward push on the landing. Try as I maythe EX would nosedive. I learned soon enough I had to stay on the gas until I cleared the lip. But as for ajusting the pitch (panic rev) I couldn't get to happen with the ex like on my r. Maybe the fact that the r revs faster has something to do with it. I wouldn't say this is a huge advantage but it make my riding a little more confident. Obviously the pro have no problem jumping the EX.

My 2 cents

there is actually no right or wrong answr here.both machines can be built to be very capable mx machines.i myself would give a 400ex an edge with riders that don't have major race experience.just look at the pros ,they have both 400's and 250r's either one is capable of winning.
once the bike is built for the track and is in race ready condition then inbelieve it becomes which rider is the fastest ,not which machine is faster.
