What would it take to make a 400ex faster than a DS 650?

I would like to know how much $ and what mods it would take to make a 400ex faster than a stock DS 650, or at least closer in speed. I'm looking to buy soon, and like both bikes, but I like the lighter weight of the Honda. Plus I could get the Honda for about $800 cheaper around here from what I've researched so far. So, my question is, could $800 make the Honda as fast or faster than the DS? And if so, what mods would it require? Thanks for your patience and any replies,

From what i have seen. Just my personaly observations. A mildly built 400 with a good pipe will have no trouble keeping up with a stock DS as long as both riders are close in weight. Get a goo pipe, filter, 416 bore, cam, and springs and it will keep up. This wont be all you do because you will want to mod your motor more while it is apart. You may have more money in the honda but it looks better, is smaller, handles a grip better and has a better power band then a DS. DS are kinda boring even thought they have high HP.

Probally towing your 400ex behind my raptor !!! Seriously, You dont have a chance of doing anything for under $800 that would make it it faster. I have yet to lose to a "400" lost 1 to 440 ex that was more than the owner was telling and my DS out pulls, etc my raptor. The DS has 20% more HP than the raptor and if you cant beat my raptor you wont satnd a chance on the DS. The DS handles any whoop you can throw at it but yes it is UGLY thats why I ride my Raptor and my 15 yr old rides the DS. What about a raptor ?? The 03's are due out in june and you should be able to get a raptor 02 pretty cheap.

I'd try a jet-pack. There's no way you'll be faster (on the top end) than a DS 650. I guess a turbo might do it, but if you're going to spend that much money, you might as well buy the DS 650. The 400ex will always be faster in the tight and technical spots.

As a former 400EX owner I just love this type of "insight".
Seriously though, you can run off and leave a DS for free by charging though a tree strewn trail with openings narrower than 50", or one with lots of logs that have to be wheelied over. Otherwise break out the checkbook and say adios to that legendary Honda dependability.

$800 will get your motor up and running with raptors and DS 650's,,,I've put about $400 in my motor not including the filter, jet kit and complete pipe and I run with stock raptors all day long,,and out run some of them. So it's not as far fetched as others are making it out to be,,also changing your gearing around will help too.
