buying a used quad need help.

I am looking at an 87 honda 250x. the guy sais he will trade it for my 90 suzuki dr 350 dirt bike. my delema is is that my friend tells me that it is too old and to save your money and get a newer honda 300ex. he sais that somethin is going to brake within a couple of years. but my sisters boyfriends friends both have them and they work fine. so i need your advice on what i should do. i think it is good because then i dont have to go through the hasle of selling my dirt bike

If it has been taken care of, it should be fine.
See what the outside appearance looks like. It the outside was abused, chances are he didn't take care of the inside either.

Check the oil to see if it is dirty, or has metal shavings in it.
Neither is a good sign.

As a reference, you should be able to get a nice 250X for 1800-2200.

I sold my 87' 250X for 2000.00 with a set of extra paddles.
It looked great, and was well taken care of.

Also check for oil leaks around the engine.
