I have had my 2002 Scrambler 500 4x4x for just a few weeks now and I noticed that the Chain seems to be wearing on the outside. There are consistent rub marks along the outside edge of the chain.
Is this normal, If not what do I adjust.
The Owners manual is just attrocious.

that doesn't sound normal. You may check that chain guard underneath, it might be rubbing. I would look for places it might rubbing on things. It is normal for the chain to loosen the more you ride, especially if you do not clean it and lube it properlly and often.

 

I would bet it's rubbing the chain gaurd. You have to adjust the chain slack pretty often if you ride hard enough. The chain should have about 1" of play midway between the sprockets.

 

one other thing to look at...the swingarm. I had mine come loose and when it does, it causes the whole back end to twist and bind the chain. This makes the outer edge of the chain rub against that chain guard and the metal sprocket guard. To check this out just jack up the rear end of the bike IN FRONT of the swing arm. grab ahold of either the axle or the tires and try to shift the swing arm side to side. There should minimal movement if any side to side. If there is, then either the bolts that hold the arm on are loose or you need new bushing in the arm itself.
