I can turn my handlebars about an inch in each direction freely without turning the tires. Anyone have an idea of what I could do to fix it??

 

How old is the machine?
How many miles on it?
Has the front been hit bad?
Where is the play, in the tie rods? Inner end, outer end?

Get under the front end and find out where the play is.

 

I flipped my 2K over and had to remove the steering shaft to straighten it.Some time after assembly I got the same thing you have. I found the lower bearing retainer nut loosened up. OK now. Also check all your belt air ducting clamps for tightness. some are falling off or leaking easily.
