I have a 86 atc 250-R I just rebuilt the top end and the compression is 220. I can still kick it over good, but I blew a head gasket the other day and I was just wondering if that could have caused it?

Yes you can have too much compression. Anything over 180 lbs or so should be ran with race gas. The more compression you have the more wear there will be on parts.
I'm running about 220 with a CR gasket at .120" over and do not leak.
