Does anybody have any information or problems with their starter on an 01 raptor. The starter motor is fine, where I appear to have the problem is the gear down in the crankcase that has the one way assembly hooked to it. I am able turn the gear both ways and sometimes it will catch. When I'm trying to start the quad, it just makes a spinning sound, and everyonce in a while it will turn over once or twice but sound horrific while doing so. My buddy also has an 01 Raptor and his is starting to do the same thing, just not in as bad of shape yet. The one way assembly costs $166 and I don't want to have to buy it unless I know that's what it is. Any information would be appreciated.

It sounds like your one way bearing. The gear should only turn one way not both that is what the one way bearing is for. The one way bearing turns all of the time, but the gear only turns when you hit the starter. You should replace the one way as soon as possible. The gear is another $80 if it is damaged were the one way bearing rides. Do a searh for threads "Raptor: AC Magneto rotor?" and "Raptor starter one way clutch". They should give you all of the info you need. I just replaced my one way and gear in my 01 Raptor last week. If you take the one way out and look at it you will be able to tell if that is what it is for sure.

Thanks Fastraptorman for the response. Do you know what other parts will be needed to make the change. Obviously the one way assembly as well as the crankcase cover gasket and starter cover gasket, but do you know of anything else that will need to be replaced that I have missed.

Oil and filter. That should do it unless you deceide to do the gear. I didn't want to spend the $80 on the gear, but I didn't want the new $166 one way to go out again because I was to cheap to spend the extra $80. I actually had the new one way on the old gear and spun it and it sounded a little rough. It sounds smooth on the new gear. Somebody else said they smoothed the old gear with emrey cloth and it is working fine. I would be concerned about the gear now being out of spec and causeing the one way to fail again. Clean all of the metal filings off of the AC Magneto rotor. I am also going to change the oil and filter again after my first ride to make sure I got all of the metal filings out. You might also want some gasket sealer for around the wires(rubber plug) that goes into the top of the side cover.

Good luck,

it's the one way bearing alright. i had mine replaced recently. it was larger than i expected. anyway, a few of the bearings were really ground down. i didn't replace the gear. the mechanic said it looked fine.....????? but be sure to change the oil. maybe even a couple of times. there was shaved metal everywhere.

The one way bearing is standard maintenance stuff on the Raptor. Change oil, add gas, and change the one way starter bearing. DO NOT RIDE UNTIL THIS PROBLEM IS FIXED! The spring in the bearing has came apart and is migrating all through your engine!!! Seriously. Yamaha paid for mine and the machine was not under warranty. You may as well add a timing key while you are in there (if you are not gonna add a high compression piston in the future).
