I have a few questions. I haven't owned one in about 10 years and forgot a few things.
1. What oil/fuel mixture should I run?
I have been running 32-1. We live in the high desert, and my kids are riding it. They never get the throttle more the 1/2 open.
2. I did change the plug already to a split-fire (I am a fan of them)
3. Previous owner said the original owner did the top end before he got it, which was a 2 years ago or so.
4. Replaced the spark-plug boot, it was cracked.
5. Air filter looked clean and in good shape
6. Haven't replaced oil yet, I will. The p. owner said he just did it though.
Anything I should know????

32:1 is fine, just make sure you use a good quality oil. I personally run Amsoil at 50:1 along with alot of other people, never had any problems, it's 100% synthetic oil. I run Honda's HP transmission fluid, make sure you change it all the time, cheap insurance!! Keep your air filter clean and good quality oil mixed in with at least 93 octane fuel (depending on your motor of course) and change the transmission fluid on a regular basis and you're good to go. I personally would yank out the split fire and put in an NGK BR8ES plug gapped at .024", nobody I know who owns R's runs the splitfire, it may be fine but the NGK plug is less than a couple bucks.

Don't overtighten the transmission drain bolt, it's known to strip out if you get too carried away when you retighten.

There are a ton of aftermarket parts for the R, I'd suggest picking up a DirtWheels mag and browse through the ads, you'll see what I mean. Highly recommend Eddie Sanders Racing items for the R:

Strictly Honda stuff, best prices check here:
http://www.servicehonda.com/ - This site gives you parts illustration for all 4 years on the R along with prices which are better than you can get from your local Honda dealer.

If you want a better forum to post questions/problems, try this one:
http://pub20.ezboard.com/bhondatrx250r - This is an R only forum.
Another good forum:
http://pub28.ezboard.com/btheultimatetrx250rforum
And MacDizzy's site:
http://www.macdizzy.com/ (R guru deluxe!!) This site even has an '86 R owners manual you can print off!

Welcome back to the R family, the greatest quad ever built!!

PS. WHere do I get Amsoil (spell check) and the split fire's were $1.00 more. I have ran them for years, just personal preference I guess.

Thanks again,

Ron

I agree with previous thread, however, if Amsoil is hard to find, I would use PJ1 goldfire pro. I have used this oil for 15 years & never stuck a piston. Chunk Splitfire. Get the NGK. No hard feelings.
P.S. 32:1 with PJ1

I agree. Forget the splitfires. And also forget autolites, champions.....

NGK is the plug to get.

Can't say that I have. I spend alot of time hanging out with a local motorcycle shop owner/racer/mechanic. His motocross team has used them and he says they are junk. I am a mechanic myself & I do not see anything that this plug offers. Like in these forums, I take advise from knowledgable people & put it to good use. I also try to think of what a part can help or hinder an engine. I also like to use what my motorcycle/ quad recomends. Split-Fire is not. I am just trying to help, & if they work good for you then use them. I will stick with my trusty NGK's.

GM ATF is great for the crankcase. Spectro Clutch Saver or Honda HP is great also. Gear oil is not formulated for a clutch.

I wasn't upset or anything, was just asking. I had a jet-ski (2 cycle) and the split-fire ran great. Only changed the plug once in three years of riding, it keep that clean. After that became a fan.

Thanks and advice is free, so I take it
