Well I finally picked up my cannibal from the dealer and it had the new motor and the hydraulic clutch and MC1000 computer. Dealer didnt have time to break it in so I did it on Saturday BY THE BOOK. after the five short rides seperated by complete cooling I drained all of the fluids, this is what I found. First off the transmission fluid was a blue color, and not see thru at all, I wonder if Cannondalke ships them with some sort of breaking tranny fluid?? But anyways the filter was full of metal shavings, this is to be expected, but I was amazed at the blue color of the fluid. Next I drained the engine oil, and to my surprise, I swear I could not find any metal shavings on the oil filter, it came with the paper filter in the engine, and I swear not one shaving. So I filled her up with both fluids and rode Sunday for three hours at the track, going to drain fluids again tonight to see fo the engine gave up some shavings. BUt I will report this new engine and mc1000, this thing starts very easily, and I had no stalls for the whole day. I am very happy with the new set-up. what do you guys think of the blue tranny fluid and no engine metal shavings.
and whats with no more metal re-usable oil filters, I had to buy three from the dealer at 11$ a filter, seems steep to me, but oh well, I got my new engine!!!
oh one more thing my engines number is 273# how could it be so low...you can tell it is brand new though, and it has the clear tranny check window too!

Maybe it's a 2003 engine? I'd say they start the serials over every year (but that's just a guess).

Glad to hear you are finally running, again. I also did my first oil changes this weekend. I also saw no metal in the engine oil. After closer inspection, if you "peel open" the pleats and look down in-between them, you'll probably see a little metal. That's the way mine went anyway. Also, the rear oil filter- that's where I found all the metal. I'd definitely recommend cleaning that thing! Lots of shavings in there. Did you check yours?? Man, what a pain it is! I had the tank off and rotated the top of the shock back- a bit easier to get to, but still no fun. I'd highly recommend getting a stubby 14mm wrench for the job(if you don't have one). That would make it a lot easier.

Blue trans. oil, huhhh?? That makes me very leary of what my dealer told me. Mine was blue all day long and he told me repeatedly that he had done the break-in and changed all fluids. So how did my first ride go?? It definitely wasn't a break-in ride. Uh-oh. Like he'd ever admit to anything otherwise.

nrath, well maybe they send the tranny fluid with the b9ike in the crate, anyways so you changed both oil filters huh? I was hoping not to have to get the other one, its hard to get too for sure, I have never tried to change it, it is supposed to be a coarce filter, so there should only be large chunks in there, is that what you found? could you go thru what you had to do to get to the filter, I looked at it and said I cant get that thing out, so screw it.

As I posted in my Friday night fun, I think the best way to get to it is to pull the rear fenders and gas tank. That's only about 10 screws and would only take about 10 minutes. The quick connects on the tank are nice, they work real well and make removing the tank easy. It's a little tricky getting the front one reconnected, but not too bad. Then pull the bolt out of the top of the shock and tilt it back. You'll have to work it around the fuel line a little. This is also an excellent time to replace the fuel filter. Wiggle back the heat shield on the oil line, work off the oil hose, and break out that shiny new 14 mm stubby wrench you'll want to buy. Like I said, I used a small Crescent wrench- about 5" long, but I don't like using those for anything. I figure we should all be removing this filter to clean it about every other oil change(it'll be every oil change for me for the first 2 or 3) and the cost of a new wrench is worthwhile. Get it out, break out a little brake cleaner and some air, then it's ready to go back together. It's definitely a bothersome job, especially if your used to the simplicity of working on Jap bikes.
The filter is just a little more coarse than the trans. filter.
It could probably be removed without taking all the stuff off, but it would have to be a God awful pain in the neck. It seems like it would be almost impossible. If you were determined enough, it could be done with a few cusswords I'm sure! Less frustrating to just take off the fenders and the tank.

I'm proud to say i changed it without a stubby or moving the shock.
Probably only took an hour longer..haha
I'd leave that filter through several rides,Trout, clean it once, then every season. That's a big filter and a couple shavings aren't hurtin anything. unless maybe they escaped the filter..
Is your new engine gear noise less than the old one? I rode a newer cannibal the other day that was a lot quieter than mine.
