I just purchased (ordered) the new starter (choke) cables part # 5LP-26331-10-00 and was wondering if anyone else has purchased these cables and if the little spring at the end where its inserted into the carb comes with the cable? TIA

I can't say for sure on the Raptor but it does not on the Kodiak. The spring you mention is part of the plunger assembly.

Thanks Notu, the yahoos looking at the microfish couldn't find it and I gave up waiting. The old one is probably ok anyway. I ordered 2 cables. The one on my Raptor is shot and I figured I'd go ahead and get one for my other stock Raptor while I was at it.

Seems that the problem is that water can get into the choke plunger, most probably from pressure washing and the spring corrodes and the choke sticks on, this happened on my 01, i used a ball point spring, cleaned up the plunger bore and filled the spring cavity with light grease and everyone once in a while squirt WD40 into the cable rubber boot to drive any water out.

apparently the 02 cable has a rubber sealing O ring ?? can't confirm that thou ?

I should have mentioned that I bought a replacement spring from the hardware store for the Kodiak. I had to cut a few coils off it. The plunger was fine and I didn't want to spend another $25.00 just for the spring.

Thanks for the info guys.

When I last had the choke assembly out, it had water damage. I cleaned it up and put it back together. I know that it needs replacing and Ive known of the upgraded cable for some time now. I guess you could say I've procrastinated long enough.

I posted the entire service bulletin regarding the 2001 Raptor choke cable a couple of months ago along with other Raptor tech bulletins.

You can find them along with other info here

Unfortunatly the spring doesn't come with the cable...nor is the spring available without purchasing the entire choke plunger kit.

Like many here have said, it is possible to find alternatives to the OEM spring if you use a little investagating.

Both Keihin and Mikuni only sell choke plunger kits. They don't offer the parts seperatley. They sell it this way to Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, etc so they have to pass it down this way to the consumer.....

HOWEVER...Kawasaki takes a different approach. They take the kits from Keihin and break it down into seperate part numbers. They sell their springs seperatly, but unless you find a dealer who stocks alot of oddball Kawasaki parts, it will still be hard to match up the one you need. There are a few different sizes.

Another problem is that Kawasaki primarlily only uses the Keihin carburetors, so that leaves out the Yamaha owners with units that have the Mikuni.

I've heard of people using anything from the spring in a ball point ink pen to springs out of suspension componets from toys. Considering that a choke plunger kit usually runs about $25.00 to $30.00, a ERTL radio control car that costs $5.00 isn't that bad of a deal...LOL

Later,
Patrick
