Boring & stroking the DS
#1
I think most of the folks that hang around these type of sites are all addicted to the HP bug to one extent or another and are constantly looking for cheap hop ups.
Heaven only knows we have some sick puppies on this board
Unfortunately there are no real cheap hop ups for producing more top end on the DS, but it is great to see more main stream companies offering more products than ever befor. I've heard that Trinity is not too far from offering some choice of big bore kits - it's just getting better and better for the DS guys!
I like the way my bike is running right now, but I'm starting to plan my next round of mods and they will envolve boring and stroking. I've been doing a lot of research lately on the topic and boy there sure are a lot of opinions out there. The one concern I have is with stroking, sure it will definately produce more torque-which we all love- but I understand it does it at the expense of piston acceleration.
My question goes out to the stroker guys - do you notice a difference in rev time? (ie. slower) or does the rotax rev just as fast and just as high as befor? With my current mods I rev to about 9500rpms in 1st - 3rd and about 9000 in 4th and 5th, am I gonna lose any of that top end rpm band?
any input is appreciated.
BTW - I'm interested in the sam coe kit at the present time
according to JeffnRivercity , a 103mm bore and maybe a 5mm stroke would give you about a 733cc engine, the price is the most resonable thing so far- I wonder about longevity?? you know the Yamaha rod and all

Major is right, the quest for more HP is a sickness. I think Jeff is near a critical condition hehe.
My big dilema seams pretty much cams. I want to do cams, at least I think I do. The thing is, I really like the way my cams develope power. It hits hard on the bottom and pulls good through the mid range to the top. I could go with a high end cam and then lose the launch that I love, and that seems to be all there is out there. My concern is as I add more HP via, ported head, piston, carbs, and HD valve springs the the amount of power the rest of the motor will excede the cams ability to keep up. So, does anybody know of a cam out that has simular power building caracteristics, but can delever the goods? I am hoping to be able to get on Major's rippen quad and see how his cams feel. His seems to have good bottom end from they way it sounds. Just wondering what the rest of you have found?
Also, has anyone tried just doing HD valve Springs with the Stock cams? Wouldn't they allow the cams to operate to a higher RPM range? If this is the case I might just stick with the stock cams to keep the power ranges that I like. Please speak now or forever hold your peice

I too liked the bottom pull of my "all around cams" and seem to have lost that with the Race2 cams.

What you need to find is someone that grinds custom cams. Since every combo is usually different in one or more ways, each one can benefit by having cams ground to those needs. Valve events dictate cylinder fill and there are big benefits to be had with a custom ground cam. A really good cam guy can even retain good low speed driveablity while building a really strong midrange and topend
