Ds 650 lies

I keep reading all these stories of people on stock banshees blowing by ds's in the dunes. Also someone posted in the honda forum that his 400ex with a pipe and jetting changes blows past ds's in the dunes. Anyone have any experience with their ds against other machines. I would thinjk a 400ex would have to have a whole lot done to it to even catch a ds.

I was so tired of reading all those messages on the atv BBS that I came here. At least these discussions are specific and informative. I weigh 240 lbs and have raced and beat little guys on stock 400s and banshees at Bowie.
I do not see any way they could begin to keep up. Something else to consider is the class of machine. It is like comparing apples to oranges.

Don't beleive that crap. I have a stock ds and 3 of my buddies have 2000 400ex's. 2 of those ex's are piped and jetted with K&N the other is stock. The two piped ones take me off the line but not for long and the stock one is way behind. I also way about 100 pounds more than my buudies. When we race around my track I blow by them and keep pulling away from them. And once I get my pipe and gearing right they are really going to be pissed. My one buddy is already thinking of getting a honda XR 650 motor and stuffing it in his brand new EX. I should have my Wood Rotax stage I kit in a week. Then I'll post more info.

A week after I got my DS I went to Bowie to test it out in the sand. Without paddles, and I still had jetting problems, I raced a banshee with about $3,000.00 in mods. I mean ported, polished, drag pipes, the works. I got a bad start so he started the race about a bike length in front. By the middle of the 100 yard hill I cought up to him, and at the top I started to pass him.

While riding tight trails, I have seen the 400 pull away from the DS but once it open up or we come upon a fire road, there is no contest. The lead the 400 EX is gone very quickly. There is no way a 400 or banshee could beat a properly tuned DS on the sand!

Reaper what did you have to do to the jetting on your ds? Mine has the bottom end bog or dead spot and after that it really flies, but I was wondering about jetting myself and hadn't gotten around to it. I only have 6hrs. on mine and haven't really been hammering it to much yet. I also own a 400ex, have owned 3 250r's and 1 banshee (all were or are modified) and even with the ds being choked down it is the fastest stock for stock bike of the bunch, when it comes to modifying the skies the limit and there's no end to what can be done to any of these machines in the hp. dept., handling is another story all together.

The most horsepower for the 400ex now is about 45 fully modified. Considering the weight difference, the 400ex with 45hp should run with the DS. Also, a Banshee with pipes and correct jetting should make about the same horsepower as a stock DS with less weight. With the power the DS makes stock, nothing would keep up with a modified one! Well...Maybe a properly set up LT500? Nah!

I live in AZ, so the higher elevation made my DS choke really bad when I tried to gas it. It would also foul the plug about every hour. I started by moving the needle down a half of a position. It wasn't quite enough, so I ended up a full position down. It is suprisingly easy to do. I also took it to the shop and had them do the lower jet.

It looks like someone has developed a rash. I am glad we have someone who has rode both of these machines fully modified and definately knows that the LT500 is faster. Your vast knowledge is impressive! Or is the previous reply a simple person with a shot in the dark? Hmmmmm.....
