Dropped valve on a 250X
#1
How many guys have dropped a valve on a 250X and had it ruin the motor? It seems like a pretty common problem. I have a 1987 250X and I think I am going to end up just parting this quad out. Is the rod usually bent after this happens? Whats the usual cost to repair a motor like this? thanks in advance.

I have had it happen to me on a 1992 model. I have also heard of it happening to others. In each case, these engines were raced or ridden extremly hard though.
I don't see the valve causing damage to the rod. Mine and the others all had holes in the pistons, but no damaged rods. In these cases anyway.
Take the head to your dealer and have them check it for damage and whether or not it is so severe that a new one is neccessary. If so, these parts are easy to find used now. A used head, new piston kit, cam, valves, gaskets, and any other miscellaneous shouldn't cost you no more than $500.00 total
Check the rocker arm on the valve that dropped as well as the camchain for kinks or breaks.

I dropped a valve on my X when it had a 273 big bore kit. I blame it on RD springs (less than 20 hours of riding they were worn out) and over reving. Mine just took out a valve guide. It had a JE piston which luckily didn't get hurt. The valve was a 1mm oversize intake that was around $80 each if I remember correctly.
I would be very interested in purchasing this bike from you. If you want to sell it, please let me know.

2FiftyX, do you possibly have the paper work for the valve springs. Out of curiosity, were they RD springs? Also, how long ago was the engine built? Did the keeper wear the groove and slip out? Sounds like you had the same problem I did. When we checked the spring pressure after I dropped the valve, it was about the same as the 13 year old stock springs. The outside of the springs were smooth (I didn't notice this when I put the engine together), so I think they weren't shot peened.
I don't have a credit card, and can't figure out how to set up an ebay account without one, otherwise I would jump on that. Has it been ported?

I have to look for the paperwork but I dought I have it. I'm not even sure what kind they are I just know they where suppose to be performance springs, I guess not enough performance for the big bore. I didn't do a whole lot of investigating exactly how it dropped but I know it was because the springs where not strong enough causing the vavle to resonate with either the vavle not sitting correctly or the retainer coming loose. The motor had 20 hours on it at best.
Yes, the top end was ported and polished, not sure by who as I bought it that way.
All you need to open an ebay account is an mail address through a paid provider, i.e. aol, msn, your work email, etc...hotmail isn't secure enough. They do that to keep people from opening bogus accounts.
You will need a checking account with your bank or credit card to pay with ebay payments or pay pal. If you don't have that most people accept a cashiers check or money order, some even personal checks.
