This weekend, I was towing an ATV with my 89 Warrior, and I got going fine, but got into some real soft sand and it started burrying and loading up. When it got really loaded (barely moving, but digging into the sand) it all of a sudden really started bucking. I looked down at the shifter, and it was jumping up and down with the bucking. To better explain the bucking, it was like something was catching and slipping in the engine (almost like skipping teeth on a gear).

Anyway, once I unhooked the ATV I was pulling, it was fine. Pulled out of the sand fine, and rode the rest of the day without incident.

I just changed the oil and there wasn't any debris to be found, it was just due for a change.

Does it sound like my clutch is on the way out? The bike is an 89 with a K&N, Cobra pipe, and no other mods. I am pretty sure that the clutch has never been changed.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Dean

No not really it sounds like it was just the sand u were in, spinning like that can cause it to do that, mines going south but it just wont hold all the top end power i can feel it slip.

vdubn, I would suspect the clutch also. sounds reasonable. has enough left to haul your butt around but the extra load of the other bike pushed it over the limit.

Mine works till u get it hot then it cant handle the top end. When it slipps though it just revs way up. kinda like completely breaking free then reving like crazy. If u think its ur clutch slipping then get some stronger springs. But the kinda jumping thing sounds more like you were eating ur gears up. Or possibly your chain was skipping.

vdubn,
has your Warrior ever jumped out of gear 5th,or 6th, under a load or at high speed? Some of the older Warriors will show wear on the shift forks or even bend a little, this would cause the shifter to move,as the slop in the fork moved it. I don't think a worn clutch would cause the shifter to move,if this problem seems to continue or get worse, you may need to split the cases and check the gears and shift fork for damage or wear.

The bike has never popped out of any gears, and has never done this at all. I suppose that it is possible that it could be a shift fork issue, but I am 99% sure that there aren't any actual gear issues (if there were, it would have continued to act like it did after I unhooked the ATV I was towing).

It was doing it in 1st gear, I was just barely moving.

I just put a new chain and sprockets on the bike (with new sliders, rollers, etc.), and the tension is set correctly, so I imagine that it isn't the chain.

Has anyone else had a clutch act like this?

Thanks,
Dean

yeah my warrior did the same thing last weekend when I was pulling out my buddy's foreman. He was stuck in some nasty clay and I had to inch him out little by little. I would back up and ****** the springy nylon strap we had and end up doing a wheelie every time. Half the times I would come down from the wheelie and the neutral light wouldn't be on but the bike would be in neutral?? But after a little rest I rode home, the rest of the weekend and this weekend with no problems I just think it was hot and shockloading the motor but all has been ok since. The warrior is a beast and can handle lots of punishment, and I dont think you should worry at all!!!

Mine has done this when trying to pull by brothers quad out of the mudd but thats the only time it has done it. More than a year on the quad now with no other problems. The warrior is not geared for towing.

Mine jumps outa 3rd tore it apart didnt find the problem, replaced some worn stuff rebuilt it and put it back together, when it want to jump i just push it harder that normally makes it stop.
