I have a y2k Trailboss and was wondering what filter to put on. I drive mostly trails and go through some muddy conditions. Is one better than the other?

Hey jtaylor,

They both have purposes. I read that the Uni works better for sandy conditions. So if you ride sand or railroad tracks I would go Uni. K&N is said to be better for muddy conditions. So, it looks like you should go K&N. I hope I helped a little. I just wish I could remember where I read this. So I could have you go and check it out.

Go with the UNI, it is usually half the price. I would use "Competition Accessories" (1-800-543-3535) where they sell for under $20. I use to recommend Chaparal Motorsports but my latest experience with them left an extremely bad taste in my mouth.
Scott.

Mr. Taylor, I too have wondered what filter to by so I bought them both. I ride mostly in soft sand and dry conditions, when I used the K&N in this situation I had a trace of dust particles down in the rubber tube going to the carburator, not a good thing I thought! The K&N was oiled as per the directions in the box and to top it off I even had a outerware cover on the filter. I decided to try the UNI filter next. It is a two piece unit, the inner foam filter is a finer foam element than the outer foam element. This filter properly oiled has out-performed the K&N filter and without any reduced performance from my Scrambler 400. I use 30W engine oil on the UNI filter and clean it every other time I go out riding. I think you would be better off buying the UNI it doesn't cost as much as the K&N and it doesn't need special cleaner or oil as K&N does. Now I'm not knocking K&N I just don't think it works for my Scrambler for whatever reason. hope this sheds some light on the subject of airfliters for you. Ride safe!
