I own a 01 sportsman 400 and have put 1500 miles on it and have had no problems. My brother and brother in law both bought the 500 HO, I would spend the extra money and get the 500 they are botht the same other than the engine. The 500 can blow me away anytime. Spend the extra money.

where did u hear that?
becuase the 400 motor isnt as powerfull as the 500HO motor, which the 500HO motor moves the heavy chassis a lot quicker. the 400 is good, but not as fast. i would spend the extra money and buy a 500HO, they are well worth it.

You must be thinking of the Scramblers. The 400 Scrambler always felt quicker than the Scrambler 500 because the Scrambler 400 is a 2-stroke. The 400 engine in the SPORTSMAN is a FOUR-stroke just like the 500. The Sportsman 400 is slower than the Sportsman 500 for sure. If I were you, I would definately go for the Sportsman 500, or you will be wishing you did later on.

I have the 500HO and my girlfriend has the 400. I MUCH prefer the 5 over the 4 powerwise. Top speed on hers is about 51 and mine is right at 60 (on the speedo). The 500 also has alot more "pull" when pegging it. I would opt for the 500 HO over the 400. My .02 worth.

Calibration, tires, weight of rider that's what we're talking about. No two bikes are identical.

Just "tlkn" about what the speedos said. Was warming it up for 275 mile oil change. This was on blacktop for about 1/4 mile and did not seem to be climbing anymore. I know there are differences in machines and alot can be done with tweaking and $ etc. If you got 58 guess U got a good un.
