Can you retro-fit the steel braided brake lines that are used on the newer versions of the Scrambler and Sportsman to older versions? I went to a Polaris Dealer and they told me that I could NOT do that because the fittings were different.

I thought I would try to buy some line, fittings, and connections myself and create my own. After going to a motorcycle dealership, the parts guy there mentioned that his friend took a braided brake line off of one of the new Sportsmans and put it on his 99 Scrambler.

I found this hard to believe! I did check the parts manuals for the 2003 Scrambler (which I believe uses the steel braided lines) and compared it to the 99 Scrambler manual. The picture for the 03 and 99 "Master Cyclinder / Brake Line" are very similar. This does not necessarily mean they are exactly alike.

I am guessing that my local polaris dealer is looking at the part numbers and seeing the difference there, but not realizing that the parts are exactly the same in reality.

Does anyone know if the fittings are the same?

 

jondeer, I have 2 99sports with the rubber lines, and a 01 scrambler with the braided lines. I will try and look tonight and see if the lines will interchange. I was thinking they would.Bubba

 

I have switched all of my bikes to the braided brake lines. When I did mine I changed the master cylinder. Not sure if you need to though. Just like the metal master cylinder better than the plastic one. You will need to change the t-fitting also. It is the one in front of the gas tank and has the brake switch in it. Other than that just order the parts and put them on.

 

On my 95 Xplorer for the front i used steel braided lines off a 2002 Magnum, at the valve block i used an automotive adaptor fitting so the smaller end of the line would screw into the valve block. Works great and greatly improved the braking abilities of the bike.

Like the others stated, change out the junction block....and if you want even better braking, change to the newer style master cylinder. The lines and the master cylinder make a HUGE difference in stopping ability. You almost have to consider wearing a cup to keep the nuts from bashing on da tank. hehe.

About how much $$$ are we looking at here for this upgrade?

 

Depending on how much of a discount your dealer gives you, the braided lines run est $15-20 each....need 4, or 5 if you do the foot brake. The master cylinder was around $75-100.

I just got off the phone with the dealer and they are telling me they want $34.99 for the line from the master cylinder to the junction box, $39.99 for each right and left line leading to the front calipers, $54.99 for one of the rear lines and $56.99 for the other rear line. They also told me they wanted $175 for the master cylinder. How did you get yours so cheap? I guess you either got hookups or my dealer is ripping me off.

 

Your dealer is smokin' crack! You can double check Partsland.com for list price comparisons. I'm not saying they HAVE to work with you on a price, but if you're a consistant customer, the darn well should take care of you. I could be wrong, maybe suppliers where changed and the prices were jacked. Double seems kinda nuts though.
