Honda Rincon won the 2003 Baja 1000?!?!?!
#1
I was just reading that the overall winners for the quad class were some mexican dudes on a Honda Rincon..... no mention of Greg Row on the DS650... that must have been one worked over utility machine!!!

Acctually the Rincon came in 5th place in the Quad Open Pro class. There were 12 in the class. Class winner was N.Nelson with Greg Row coming in 4th just in front of the Rincon. If you go to off-road.com, you can see the results. Why they said the Rincon was the first quad to finish I don't know. Maybe it was the first utility to finish. But overall its still a feet to finish, hats off to the Rincon. Seems to me that this is the kind of riding the Rincon was design for, fast trial riding.

No need to argue about it. It is in plain clear readable english at offroad.com's website. Click here to read for your selves.

Perhaps there was a mistake in the story... but it seems like it would have had to be a pretty bad blunder to put it in there twice. Once in the text and again with a picture and caption.
Perhaps it was the unofficial result or something.

Numbers with an "a", are quads. Glad it didn't win, because we would have never heard the end of this one!!!!! Still, just finishing is a great accomplishment!! There have been utilities raced before, but there is no seperate class for them. They may have meant that it was the first utility to finish, who knows??? Off-Road's Baja coverage has been pretty lame lately!! Even after all these years, the 250R is usually the bike you have to beat.

I thought I heard that the Rincon was factory sponsored??? Honda sponsoring a quad??? The Rincon finished 3 hrs behind the 1st place bike. Now, 3 hrs at 60 mph is something like 200 miles. That is a lot of ground to be behind, so it isn't as impressive as it looks!
Everybody makes a fuss about the DS but it hasn't finished first since the Baja 2000 win, which makes me think that win was just a fluke.

Here are the facts straight from Honda.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Rincons 1 & 3 at Baja 1000: Honda's SUV of ATV's beats the pure-sports machines to the finish line
At the 2002 Baja 1000, the world's most famous off-road race, the winning ATV looked a lot like a Honda Rincon with some number plates slapped on because that's exactly what the winning machine was. That's right, Honda's new sport-utility Rincon, the SUV of ATV's, won the ATV class in the 35th Tecate/SCORE Baja 1000, beating all the pure sports machines in the process!
The winning Rincon, ridden by Reuben Martin, Arnold "Cono" Ramirez MacFarland, Arturo Salas and Gilbert "Kiko" Santana, finished the race in 23 hours and 20 minutes, averaging 43.58 mph.
The third place machine ridden by John Gregory, Doug Eichner, Alberto "Q" Marquez and Marc Speath, was leading the race until a low speed crash in a silt bed broke a front wheel spindle. Rather than waiting for his chase crew to reach him, Eichner decided to crawl to the finish line on 3 wheels.
"We [the Rincon teams] were 1-2 going into the last hundred miles, Gregory reported. "Third place was probably an hour and a half back [at the time].
Gregory also spoke highly of the Rincon's ability to soak up the rough stuff over the 1017-mile course from Ensenada to La Paz.
"It didn't tire you out. It was so deceivingly fast; you think you're cruising along, but you're moving, you're passing people, and it doesn't tire you out. It just worked really good."
Honda's remarkable new ATV left no doubt that sport shares equal billing with utility, at least when the name on the tank is Rincon.

actually it was teh rincon that came across the finish line first. and according to my dad it was a pratty odd sight at the finish line ( he was there). i was periodically checking through the day and night to see teh results and scoring data, and i do recall te rincon coming in first. needless to say i was a little confused when i read this post and learned that instead tehy were fifth. so i did a little investigating and it look as though they were maybe penalized some time for whatever reason. below i have copied teh scoring data from the SCORE website:
2a Wes Miller 8:08 9:51 11:21 14:20 15:51 25:12
